During the year '85-'86 he returned to Cornell as a grad- uate student and received the degree of Nl. Nl. li. with the class of 1886. The following year he remained as a fellow in Sibley College, having been placed in charge ot' the Mechanical Lab- oratory, and in the Spring ot' 1887 was elected Assistant Professor of Nlechanical Engineering, a post which he held until ISQI. Since then he has held professorships in XYisconsin and Leland Stan- ford and also a responsible position with the XYestinghouse, Church, Kerr and Company. He is a member ot' Sigma Xi and ofthe American Society ot' Mechanical lingineers. Vvhile an undergraduate, he held a prominent place i11 ath- letics-rovving on the tirst Freshman Crew turned out by Cornell and on the 'Varsity a year later. Since his return to the University, he has shown great interest in athletic adairs and is a member of the Athletic Council. Professor Smith is the type of man which tits i11 so well with Cornell institutions and ideas-a thoroughly practical American. He has the sincere respect and good wishes of every undergraduate and their hearty cooperation in his every effort to make Cornell the biggest and best possible.
