imnfeasnt Qlhttt E. Qmitb ,air Q? N dedicating this book to Professor Albert 6' ' 'Q in ' W. Smith, we have endeavored to show him in our feeble way, somewhat of the feeling fi al l agp 5 ein 2 of enthusiastic friendship and goodwill that the undergraduates bear toward him. Also their appreciation for what he has done and, I Q Q we feel sure, will do for Cornell. Seldom Q, -Fr do we find a man who combines all the ual- iba ii ities which students so admire as does Dircdctor Smith-a good man, a good professor and a good fellow. And this admiration is not confined to his own students alone, but by reason of their praise and his enviable reputation as an athlete, he has come to be known and respected by all loyal Cornellians. V Albert William Smith was born August 3oth, 1856, in Westmoreland, Oneida County, New York. In that place he re- sided until 1874, when he entered Cornell, graduating with the class of '78, receiving the degree of B. M. E. Immediately thereafter he entered the employ of the Brown 85 Sharp Man- ufacturing Company in Providence, Rhode Island, and in a short time became a contractor in that establishment. He was next associated with Professor John H. Sweet at the Straight Line Engine Works in Syracuse, remaining there until 1882. In that year he accepted a position in Oswego as Mechanical Engineer for Mr. Thompson Kingsford.

Since then he has held professorships in XYisconsin and Leland Stan- ford and also a responsible position with the XYestinghouse, Church, Kerr and Company. He is a member ot' Sigma Xi and ofthe American Society ot' Mechanical lingineers. Vvhile an undergraduate, he held a prominent place i11 ath- letics-rovving on the tirst Freshman Crew turned out by Cornell and on the 'Varsity a year later. Since his return to the University, he has shown great interest in athletic adairs and is a member of the Athletic Council. Professor Smith is the type of man which tits i11 so well with Cornell institutions and ideas-a thoroughly practical American. He has the sincere respect and good wishes of every undergraduate and their hearty cooperation in his every effort to make Cornell the biggest and best possible.
