But two short years have passed since i. Cornell's day of mourning. Nlost of us remember that sad time. Anxious days were they which put to the test the loyalty of every student. God forbid that the withering blight which fell upon us then should ever visit us again! During that long night of sugering our Alma Klater, bowed in unutterable grief, clung to her sons, her purpose resolute, waiting steadfast for the dawn. And even today alas many a parent's heart still bears the mark inflicted by those cruel days. But the suilering at that time was not all the trouble. Long weeks of illness brought nnancial distress which could not be borne. And in many cases anxiety from this source not only made the sickness more severe but actually lessened the chances of recovery. But when the surliering was at its height these gloomy clouds were suddenly dispelled! In a message of cheer from our President came the news that lVIr. Andrew Carnegie desired to assume all obligations on behalf of those students who should need his help as a result of their illness. 8

lt is not didficult for you to undertand how the whole world changed its aspect from gloom to cheer, and with what a new lease of life we returned in the fall to our Alma Mater. In addition to this gift to us Mr. Carnegie presented the University with a Filtration Plant which will forestall the possibility of an epidemic ever arising from the University water supply. Surely it was the hand of Providence that moved the heart of this good man! Cornellians do not prize the donation for its money value. It is not that. But it is the way it came which appeals to them. Unique in its own field, it stands as a lasting memorial to a man conscious of real needs and abhorring the annoyance of ostenta- tious displays of gratitude. In reading this book let your minds dwell upon his acts and we know that your hearts will do the rest. Cornellians old and young are grateful to him for his handsome work of generosity. They are proud to hand his name down to succeeding genera- tions who choose Cornell as their Alma Mater. The Junior Class of Cornell University, on behalf of all their fellow-students, dedicate this book to one whom they all revere as a great and good man, Mr. Andrew Carnegie. 9
