For 'Q lx ' Q' if qv. several years it has been in possession of a Chapter House finely lo- X, lj ll, 'iii 3 cated on the main street of Williamstown, which at the Commence- i.. ll' 1 . , ment of 1877 was formally supplanted by a new and beautiful edifice, t A ' 4 erected on the same site. I 1 I-I ll 'A yi W ia In 1844 a Chapter of Kappa Alpha was founded at Hobart College, 'l fb X K 1, Geneva, N. Y. It existed but six years, being withdrawn before the I' ,y pig, College reached its present exhausted condition. In 1852 Princeton ll, ,, received a charter. This Chapter, too, had its prosperous life cut 'S li short, a year or two later, by the abolishment of secret societies at 1 W ' Princeton, by order of the Board of Trustees. In-I857 Kappa Alpha ,I W was granted the University of Virginia, but the Chapter was discon- , 5 , tinued in 1860, when the Rebellion closed the doors of the Univer-' idly' 'lat sity. T ' lil: A A . Kappa Alpha has celebrated two anniversaries worthy of note. The Y 1 gin' N first was the quarter-centennial celebration which took place at Union qt I1 1 College in Commencement week of the year I850-SI, the secondg pp- ' ,Q -. was the semi-centennial celebration that occurred during the Com-ft. '5 . 1 5. I ,gl mencement week of 1875, also at Union College. On both of 'these I i A, 'g occasions the wise and liberal policy that has always characterized if ' Union, in her relations with secret societies, was strikingly displayed. A ' Other institutions might learn a lesson from Old Union, and L' 5 u educators might do well in imitating the example set by Dr. NOTT. Q: . In the winter of 1868 the Cornell Chapter was established. It grown with the University and partaken of its spirit, so that if our l 5 W ' Chapter, the youngest of the Fraternity, now stands the peer of our I elder sisters, it is due to the same cause that has placed our youthfu ' '13 ' institution in the front rank of American Universities. The Chaptc , last year suffered a great affliction in the loss of one of its first mem: , W3 Z ' bers, Professor CHARLES FREDERICK HARTT, who died at Rio d ,ri ' , I Janerio, Brazil, on the 18th of March, 1878.
