FRESHMAN CLASS HISTORY After a hot summer, 42 of the best looking, most intelligent freshmen came pushing, stamping, and shoving into the halls of our dear institution of secondary learning. The first thing that the green wave accomplished with a semblance of order was the election of class officers. Floyd Johnson, because of his in- fectious laugh and handsome features, was chosen president, Maxine Couture, vice-president, and Patricia McConville, treasurer. Under the guidance of the upper classmen, the freshies soon learned the ropes and have settled down to conscientious study. fi' Q V. , ,HA ' , ?,,,4e'+4 ' gs .af X up Q?-:Q +P .Q gg rn 3 E if Q3 S v ' 1 1 E' 'B a, v2S' Y Q I 'Q 3 if G n I nw, Q l ' -Li rg G ml m .2 , gk f g ,J ei 'Q ag se iff ga gil 6 G is ' ,, wg I I W 1' sf 'Sf E 5 'lr 'g,.' w,!.I.,!k r 1.x 'fxq R QM L? J A CYX un DEBATE Debate work is staging a comeback and is becoming one of the most popular phases of forensic work. This season Cornell had only four representatives but they engaged in eighteen inter- school debates. Although most of the debates were non-decision, the team gained a lot of experience. The debaters were: Mary Jean Malott, Bob Lord, Daryl Smith, and Bert Minwegen. The question for debate this season was: nResolved: That the United States should form an alliance with Great Britainn. The first real debate was against Hawkins, here, on January 10. This gave the debaters sonwthing new to work on and helped them to develop their case. A tri-school meet was held in Bloomer with Cornell, Colfax, and Bloomer competing. The coaches acted as critic judges and all the debaters found improvements Cornell went to Ladysmith where to be made. A few weeks later the coaches again acted as critics. Ladysmith granted us a return match and a few town people enjoyed the event . The climax of the season was, of course, the Northwestern Wisconsin Sectional Debate Tournament held at Chippewa Falls in the Junior and Senior High buildings. The teams competing there were the ncream of the cropn. Drawings were held at 10 a. East, Superior Central, Colfax, m. Our affirmative met Superior and Rice Lake, while the negative met Boyceville, Ladysmith, Amery, and Baldwin. The schedule permitted one afternoon at 2 and 5 p. m., and debate at ll a. m., two in the one at 7:50. A banquet was held between 5 and 7 p. m. for all debaters and coaches. Some interest- ing speeches were heard and musical entertainment was furnished by two boys from Chippewa Falls High. After an afternoon of hard talking, the participants in the tournament really enjoyed themselves and at the same time learned how to conduct themselves at a formal banquet, Although Cornell won only a small percentage of the dgbgteg in this tournament, it was felt that an experience was gained which will be valuable next year. FORENSICS The Forensic program in the Cornell High School this year included both humorous and serious deolsmations, oratory, and extemporaneous speaking and reading. The local contest was held at the high school auditorium the evening of March 25. The extemporaneous reading contest was held on the afternoon of March 24. The tournament for the western half of the Cloverbelt League was held March 25 at Cadott. Contestants in the serious declamations were: Lelah Jean Ambrose--nwalking Toward the Lightxi Olive Crawford--nDaddy Doon: Il Irene Fa1be-- Shadow and Substance 3 Monica the Newsboy's Dogng Dorothy Harris--'He was Mumford--WI var Eight Yar Oldng and Beverly Kidn. President ---- -Olive Crawford Sec. and Treas.--Amy Lodahl On September 8, 1955, Cornell High School greeted fifty-six new, green freshmen. We freshmen, believe it or not, were really timid and rightfully deserved the name of greenies . However, it didn't take us long to become acquainted with the school rules and we were soon headed for a full year of joyous school life. None of us received much knowledge from science, civics, and the other subjects, but we flew through the year with honors. We returned to school as sophomores to continue our life of learning and receiving an education. we were not so timid as we were the previous year, and we took great joy in teasing the poor, wee freshies ---- for we, as their supe rlor, had the right! At last one of our greatest ambitions was fulfilled ---- juniors at last. Now that we realized we were somebody, we received a big satisfaction. Our superior class of juniors looked down on our our time. Besides there was produced success. Then the Qsighl we gave our underclassmen as students, not worthy of the regular round of classes and studies, the junior class play, which was -a big young hearts turned toward spring romance biggest event of the year ---- the Prom. Finally our greatest hope was achieved, we became senior We started the year with hope in our hearts and eyes looking toward the future. Our number, now, was decreased from fifty six to forty-three, but this did not hinder us from striving for a successful school year. We chose as our motto, Wclimb though the rocks be rugged , which we used as a guiding goal throughout the year. Somehow, as spring neared, we continued our studies with a watchful eye on the calendar, waiting for that long anticipated moment ---- graduation. Now we have come to the end of our high school life, and with sad hearts, we bid goodbye to friends and memories, to enter into the world to obtain that great goal----success.
