Cornell welcomed 320 new freshmen to the campus this year, most of them endured the trials of New Stu- dent Week. For their first Cornell mixer the freshmen were paired off by computer. Several days after their arrival on campus, downtown Mt. Vernon was filled with students wearing recently acquired Cornell sweat- shirts and carrying various new accessories for their college rooms. During New Student Week the summer reading of the freshmen was discussed with faculty members and upperclassmen and the freshmen were acquainted with various aspects of Cornell life. An unexpected highlight came to Orientation Week as four Coe College freshmen on a beanie snatching raid were captured by alert Cornell monks and given a just and unbiased trial before an all Ram iury. Attorney for the defense, Baron Bremner Esq., was denied his re- quest for a change of venue for the defendants and the monks' verdict sent the four longhaired Kohawk frosh away with shaven heads and caused a few Cornell students to wonder whether or not the monks belonged to the human race or to a tribe of savages. With the closing of New Student Week, the profound declarations of humility from the freshmen, their plying of the shoeshine trade and the wearing of beanies were replaced by English seminars and afternoons in science labs. Kate Kanealy and her folkswingers de- light everyone with their welI-harmo- nized folk melodies. Kim the Ching adds an exotic note to Freshman Talent Show and is heartily applauded by the deprived upperclass men. 'v The Ram cheerleaders start off Homecoming with a burst of enthusiasm. Fireworks Set Off Homecoming Weekend Homecoming '67 looked back to the Roofing Twenties for its theme and everyone cooperated to make it a successful weekend-that is, everyone but the Kohawks. The traditional torchlight parade in Ash Park was held on Friday night. Ram supporters wore buttons with the slogan Hey, baby, l'm gonna mash your face. The pep rally included fireworks and the announcement of the Homecoming Queen and her court. Cornellians chose Sue McMasters as their queen. Her court con- sisted of Meredith Mclntire, Linda Cook, Barb Jackson and Vicki Brownlee. The Nlilts and the ATA's tied for first with their Roaring Twenties parade floats while the Kappa Thetas won sole honors among the women's social groups. Joe Spiegel pays tribute to a representative of the Cor- nell student body. Protest against the war in Vietnam lent a somber note to homecoming festivities. Maple Leaves Join Torchlight Parade The Olin men go all out, and capture the dorm decoration honors. Saturday afternoon the weather- man cooperated and scores of Ram fans had plenty to roar about in the first half of the Rams' tilt with the Kohawks. The halftime score was Cornell 2l, Coe l4. But alas, the Roaring Twenties slid into the depression of the thirties as the Kohawks took over in the second half to win 35-21. Saturday night Cornellians went underground to the Bootlegger's Ball where Queen Sue McMasters received her crown and Rams fans drowned their sorrows. if E' Ti SIM gifs? 2 ' :E X ,- , - 1 . wf ,Q 1 . f' nl J, . - M . ml pg- , . . Tarr Hall, a pre-games favorite for last place, upset all predictions by winning two events and picking up entry points in The third To win the girl's division of Winter Weekend Olympics. The favored Phi-O's were second with a win in the King's Race and high places in other events, but They couldn't overcome The scramblers from Tarr in either broom hockey or Tug-of-war. The favored DelTs pulled out To an early lead in The boy's division, but failed To win a game in broom hockey. A strong showing Sunday by The Gammas forced a Tie for first place. The Milts put in a strong bid for The title with a surprise second in the tug-of-war and a first in the Queen's Race. They trailed the Delts by iust one point going into the broom hockey tourna- ment, but like The Delts they could not survive the first round. They wound up in Third place, one point from a Three-way Tie for first. The Tarr girls looked neither quiet nor shy as they de- feated the Thetas, the Phi-O's and The Arrows on their way To the broom hockey championship. The Phi-O's played To a 0-0 Tie after The regulation twenty minutes and ten minute-overtime, so The game was declared a draw, with the teams sharing Third place. is , A , . ,, , I 5 l fs ma Students gamble with markers which are then used in the midnight auction. G! l..1.:Yfr:n.1' V ' ' Tarr Hall Upsets All Predictions an Despite the spring weather on February 23rd, Cornell students had a successful winter weekend. Two basket- ball games and two wrestling meets teamed up with a full weekend's schedule of games, gambling and danc- ing. Friday night was Casino night in the Commons, and a kickline, stage band, continuous floor show and an auc- tion were sandwiched between an evening of gambling in the Hilltop lounge. Saturday was highlighted by the King and Queen's Race. The Phi-O's hauled Chuck Gough to the crown, followed by Pfeiffer, the Arrows and Rood. Tarr, in a surprise entry, struggled to drag Nike the Greek Call 250 pounds of himj up the hill. In the Queen's Race, the defending champions the Milts held their title by carry- ing Linda Gable to a Winter Weekend victory. They were followed by the Delts, the Axes and Pauley. A lack of snow did not cancel the snow sculpture con- test. Dows won the first prize of fifteen dollars with their ice-block dice and a title of Cornell is a Para- Dice. Second prize went to the Milts and an indepen- dent group of girls from Dows won third. A contestant for the Queen's Race, Donna seems quite comfortable in her blanket seat. Wulf. Coach Jerry Clark character- ized it as a good season considering the number of young ballplayers which Cornell fielded in competition with a relatively experienced and tough conference. Cornell's offense, which ranked third in the Confer- ence, featured the passing of senior quarterback Pete Irvine and the receiving of junior end Joe Campanelli. Irvine hit on 100 of 210 passes for 1387 yards and 12 touchdowns. Campanelli, an all-conference first team selection, hauled in 46 passes Ka new school recordl for 688 yards and led the team with 44 points. Defensive standouts were co-captains Phil Brooks and Dave Austin with 104 tackles apiece. Defense was the weaker part of Cornell's game, as they ranked fifth in that department in the conference. The Ram's victories were earned with overwhelming offense powered by a well executed passing game. In addition to the all-conference selection Campanelli shared the Joseph T. Meade Best Player Award with senior offensive end Phil Brooks. Dave Austin and Ward Nelson were named to second team all-confer- ence. u- Y Q 5- hknflti . ,. 44 . ,H 4 .11 -Jeifffw' ' 4 v 5 - 1.52 ' 1, f E! s' if ,, ,r V. ,f ,, Q P' A 4 H11-A . , 3 1 , P f .H - I, 'if YA 1. , in-3 ,V -1 .31 A - X Niakf . Second in Conference Holiday Tourney The Rams won two of their last three games, finishing with a 12-6 conference record and a tie with Mon- mouth and St. Olaf for second place. Beloit was champ with a 13-5 mark. The season was a highly successful one for Coach Paul Maaske's Miracle Men, who made believers out of the rest of the conference. With no starter over 6' 2 the squad began poorly. However, sparked by the play of all-conference guard, Tim DeLong, Cornell swept the Coe Holiday Tournament in December and it was apparent they were on their way. Against taller and stronger conference opponents the Rams did extremely well. Although not expected to place in the first division they somehow managed to stay in contention for the title throughout the season. But after sustaining a loss to St. Olaf on the day be- fore the season ended they could only be satisfied with a second place finish. Cornell, who finished with a 14-8 record, had six men over 100 points. DeLong C3921, Tom Bissell 13661, Jack Carbee C2051, Daryl Varda C1971, Joe Campanelli 11391, and Dick Hodges C1181. Also, this year marked the beginning of the Rich Hal- bert Memorial Trophy in honor of a sophomore super- star who was killed in an auto crash before he could demonstrate his talents. The winner of this trophy could have been any of a number of Rams who dem- onstrated the leadership and unselfishness that Hal- bert did in his freshman year at Cornell. This year's recipient was senior co-captain Daryl Varda. A strong rebounder and an aggressive leader, Varda's play exemplified the courage and determination of this year's squad. l 3-L., I , ! - .',...- - --.---- - 42' 2,24 Cornell Roms Secure Conference L --- - '- -.1x' -, 'ki ' ---fa--Y-.FY, - :Sign imusen . ,zf OMSEH n , WALTER ROHANO ' 4 I Xa!! He comes to Cor- nell with an impressive set of credentials. Dr. tumpf has a B.S. degree from UCLA, a D.B. degree rom Andover Newton Theological School, and a h.D. from the University of Chicago. The new presi- dent vacates the position of assistant to the Chan- cellor at Vanderbilt University where he remains on record as the only faculty member to have taught in four schools of the university and where he quali- fied as one of Esquire magazine's thirty-three Su- per Profs of the nation. Primarily a professor of philosophy, Stumpf has published three books in his area: Socrates to Sartre: A History of Philosophy, Morality and the Law, and A Democratic Mani- festo. ln the short time he has presided at Cornell, Presi- dent Stumpf has revealed more of himself than we could ever have seen from his paper qualifications alone. He has openly expressed his ambitions for Cornell, which he terms a gem, specifically refer- ring to its possibilities for excellence in the educa- tional world. The president's efforts to improve the F i 'i academic status of Cornell focus on what he calls an already good faculty, specifically, his plans in- clude increased professor salaries, the highest possi- ble selectivity in faculty hiring, and careful reevalua- tion of a professor before giving tenure. Dr. Stumpf's words have not been without action. Since taking office on the Hilltop, he has shown himself to be a swift administrator, impatient for progress. The administration's refusal to renew the contracts of three professors is attributed to the president's ambitions for the college. In short, his swift actions have made him a controversial figure as many have condemned him for moving too quickly and rashly. Whatever the case, it is appar- ent that the new president's attention is directed inwardly at the basic factors which determine Cor- nell's quality as an academic institution, certainly Dr. Stumpf is more than a fund raiser. Whether we see Cornell with its new helmsman as risking the character to which it owes its present stature or as about to wake from a long sleep, change is immi- nent. inl- Howard Troyer Stuart Good Dean of the College Dean of Student Affairs William Houenden Registrar Jean Tompkins Dean of Women X.
