ON 9 6 I947 OMBINING an air of casualness with a dignity of demeanor, the Cornell faculty and administration is the foundation of the Hilltop family. The informal atmosphere maintained in the classrooms allows' extensive expression of individual thought and action on the part of each class member. Always accessible, the professors and deans are ever-ready with their expert guidance and advice. From Dean Rdads chapel chats, through the hospitable faculty- at-homes, to their own cheering squad and hilarious pep meeting, the usual barriers found on a college campus are given no opportunity to exist at Cornell. The President's Advisory Council functioned the first semester and was instrumental in the organization of the new Student Council which has gained the confidence of the students and the respect of the rest of the administration by assuming the leadership entrusted to it and by working carefully in the sphere of authority assigned to it. The unceasing efforts of the office staffs, head residents and the librarians all contribute to that fine rapport of organization which keeps the school running smoothly and effectively. The enthusiasm and understanding generated in every department, from Armstrong to South Hall cultivates and stimulates an air of alertness among the student body which intensifies the satisfaction derived from higher education. O9 f XM! r -'W EAVING the Cornell they have known and loved through their student days, the seniors turn from the ivory tower of the college campus to the brisk reality of life on their own. Not all of them were freshmen together. A portion of them spent some months and years in foreign lands, while others who remained on the Hilltop came to know the sober waiting and the brittle security of the home front. Now they are witnessing the enthusiastic attempt at a return to normalcy. Their college careers have not been as carefree and light- hearted as some of the classes which have preceded them on the list of Cornell graduates, but these students have acquired a certain stability which only comes to those who have faced life's more serious problems. Armed with a bachelor's degree, diplomas in hand, they are now prepared to meet the exigencies of the peace years with a heightened sense of the need for understanding and tolerance. f?-7 g f . ,NW 5 47 -I .- m -' . -1 'hx' ll : ,lil l' f 1 1 l I t r , l' J f JAMES KING I President History-Political Science Riverside, Illinois 4? Vernon 38' Q 'ig' EUGENE ROBERTS HE HAD A NEW PLAN HEY Were There: Waking brightly from their underclass lethargy, campus-wise juniors boldly assumed their inescapable position of leadership in school -activities this year. Spark-plugging the cause, dyna- mic Gene Roberts led recalcitrant constit- uents into an attack on out-moded Student Government machinery and formulated the replacement plan. Preparation Was There: As freshmen and sophomores the Class of '48 dimly fore- saw the destiny that was to be theirs and prepared for it. The first year on the Hill- top saw persuasive Frosh Prexy Norman Thomas promptly tested and proved, along with dependable Chuck Jacot who has continued with heels and hands flying through enemy opposition for three years in multitudinous athletic contests. Into the limelight moved Jacot, this time in the executive capacity of President, taking careful note to retain his efficiency on Mens Senate and to keep the Delts func- tioning. Class night gave the sophs an easy victory over other contenders with rugged Pat Rega and peppy Glen David- son's imitations of Cornell coeds. Amid spirit and frivolity could be found latent determination for responsibility. There Was Change: However well the past had paved the way, the incompar- ables, Jann Hyde and Jan Hough teetered it Not to be confused with Socialist leader of the same name. precipitously from previous strongholds of frenzy and enthusiasm to the sober respon- sibilities of W. A. A. president, Royal Purple editor, and Orchesis president, house offi- cer, respectively. Alice Thompson prepared to take over- A.W.S. while Shirley and Beverly Whitmer, long reliable art expo- nents, turned out masterful sketches of their classmates for the junior-sponsored year book. Prospective pedagogues Cincluding All-Conference footballer Joe Pelisekl note- booked their way through Educator Flynn's Foundations course while Beth Brown and Gwen Smythe, heedless of labor strife, worked overtime in co-editing Ed Echoes. The ever-active social committee suc- cumbed to inexorable demands and per- mitted the over-active Junior class sponsor- ship of the Prom at end of year. All Cam- pus Student Council elections, Cornell's noisiest, rowdiest and most splendidly rau- cous big binge since the war, selected semi- iuniorite, sober, studious Bob Hawthorne as president over a field of noteworthy candidates, with four-eyed Kay Brownlie in the secretary's post. Gene Roberts, class president via au- tumn-time elections, was benefitted by efficiency experts Kate Brusso, Helen With- row and Doug Matthews as respective vice president, secretary and treasurer, plus private advice from precedent-breaking Jan Crissey, re-elected to the presidency of Pfeiffer for the second time. Grades were good, classes increased in meaning to the Class of '48 whose ranks were bolstered by home-bound veterans. There was growth. They rollicked and frolliel-:ed on the grassy Hilltop, wearing their cute little purple and white caps, making -friends with their new playmates and with the rest of their new surroundings, and showing the energy and exuberance of spirit which has characterized them as a class during the past year. The group was led in its new games by a curly-haired lad named Bob Hartman, who became president of .the class. Dean Caraway, Virginia Soper, and Lynn Stiles made up the rest of our gang, backing him up nicely as vice president, secretary, and treasurer respectively. Lange, Thomsen, and Hauser, three little fellows who were always playing in the kitchen, distinguished themselves as mighty Cornell wrestlers. Jean Bentley and Eleanor Guild, who learned to write a little sooner than the rest, were co-editors of the Freshman Cornellian. The fellows of the class proved their worth when they helped Bob Channon capture the flag in the greased-pole rush, rescuing his classmates from the bondage of beanie bearing and buttoning the rest of the year. Now, of course, all the children have become suave and mature college peopleg there is hardly a baby lisp or a pair of knee pants left among them. From the group of rosy-cheeked cherubs which we greeted with open arms last fall, we have come to know a class of great promise. wx N -.. The team, coached hy Paul Scott, led the field tn upset Oklahoma A it 1 National Collegiate meet and made Mt. Vernon, Iowa, the home of intercollegiate wrestling This same team, financed by a student fund drive, we xt to San Franvisco for the National A. A I urest inf tuurnament and proved itself to be the hest in the nation hy defeating all cuniers there. G. Meredith, D. Thomas, F. Dexter, A. Partin, K. Lange, R. Snook, L. Lange, L. Thomsen, R. Hauser, J. Gregg, P. Scott, Coach, 90 X X. 1 This was the first time in the history of Cornell that the school has accomplished so much in the line of sports in a single year. Football made its debut on the Hilltop with the return of most of the old '41 gridders plus the civilians on last year's team and some freshmen. If a successful season is judged by a win over Coe, and doubly so with Grinnell as victim too, then the 1946 team had a grand year-in fact, the first time since 1937 that a purple team has subdued both of its arch Iowa rivals. Cornell claimed third in the lklidwest Conference Where it faced seven of the league's eight other team. The record was four wins, two losses and a tie. Simpson bowed in the only non-loop clash. There were 33 ex-servicemen on the varsity and many more on Charley Zoda's unbeaten 'B' team. Cor- nell's line ranked with the loop's best. Often outweighed, but seldom outfought, the Purple linemen were given a large measure of the credit for the fine record. i Evidence of the line prowess is the Nlidwest Conference selections where the Purple was the only team to land three places-all from the forward wall. End Chuck ,lacot scored five touchdowns to lead the Hilltop scoring and also led in votes by coaches for all-loop. Joe Pelisek was considered the class of league guards. A hard player and team inspiration, his top performance was a 60 minute captaincy against Coe. Ralph Ringgenberg, one of the lighter pivots in the conference, was a superb linebacker and his left play diagnosis bewildered the opposition throughout the year. Right in the middle is where every foe found the Purple tough. Two pre-war tackles, Captain Rod Joy and 'Jake' Juhrend, handled the inside plays in rough fashion. With Pelisek at guard was Bob King, who served double duty as a tackle. ln the back-field Jim King was the flashy break-away ball carrier with the aerial specialist Dick Anderson and Charlie Voyce alternating at the quarter slot. Other backs who saw a lot of action during the season were Bob Soper, Jack Koch, Pat Rega, Glen Davidson, lan Calquhoun and Dale Voyce. Wrestling resumed a new high this year at Cornell with the team winning top honors in both inter- collegiate and amateur wrestling. Dale Thomas, one of the two seniors on the team, a two year N.A.A.U. winner, would be a hard man to beat in any bracket. Arlo Ellison, the other senior, fought at one forty-five and was a specialist with the -double Wrist lock. Arlo was an A.A.U. champ in '4-3. Leading the field of wrestlers in any league would be Lowell 'Tiger' Lange. A National Inter- Collegiate and N.A.A.U. champ for two years, Lowell was also voted the best all-around athlete while in high school and has eighty six straight wins to his credit. Roger 'Joisey' Snook, unbeaten in dual competition and exponent of the famous cradle hold, with Dick Hauser, the bouncing boy of the mats, took second place in the N.A.A.U. tournament. Hauser was National champ last year and took first place at 121 lbs. in the N.C.A.A. meet this season. Snook also took second place in the National Collegiates. Leo 'Lioni Thomsen placed in both N.A.A.U. and National lnter-Collegiate Wrestling and was one of the best all-round wrestlers on the team followed closely by John Gregg and Kent Lange. Fred Dexter and Al Partin fought at any weight from 165 up and could be depended upon to add points to the team score at any meet. Partin also won the sportsmanship award at 'Frisco. ug X xx ff X I Z-'I I -4 ii Fe.-2 if Y 1 o r', ' X, L4 . 3 iii X: H 3 I . .' 1 , r X, A I I ru - . --x f ! - I ' - : ' if U -- - ,T ' .i I -- nil 1 I 'T 5 l 'T D V, l . Cornell's cage squad before their invasion of the University of Illinois to take on the VVhiz Kids. Starting slowly but gaining momentum in the stretch, the 1946--I-7 edition of the Purple Firewagon Five won six of their last eight games to complete the season with an eleven won, nine lost record and better than .500 mark for the first time since 1943. Their record of seven wins and four losses in conference competition gained them third place in the standings behind co-cham- pious Beloit and Knox. Twin regular season victories over Coe in revenge for a one point loss at the Grinnell tournament did much to gladden the hearts of the fans. ' H Bob lulorsfall, who came to the Hilltop and recognition as all-conference center from VVestern Union College via Uncle Sam's Navy, set a new school scoring record, dropping in 280 points over the twenty game stretch. Chuck jacot, wearing the Purple and VVhite for the third consecutive season, was selected by the opposing coaches as a member of the second all-loop team. His leech-like defensive play, ability to score from the field, and rebounding strength were a large factor in the teamls success. Vocational in- terests, exemplified by Jimmy King's Education Club, bind members together by com- mon interests and by providing intellectual stimulation. Honorary organizations, such as Nlortar Board led by Barb Fischbeck, and Tri Beta presided over by Glen Hogle, choose members by virtue of their merit, as a reward for loyalty, labor and aspiration. The Pep Committee is perhaps one of the hardest working on campus. lVIary Al Riedler, containing enough energy for the entire student body, heads this ever-active group which sponsored the drive to finance the Wrestlers' trip to San Francisco. The exclusive literary organization on campus consists of contributors to the HUSK, which contains the outstanding English Club publications of the year. Tau Kappa Alpha, honorary debate society, tied with Coe for first place in a state debate contest, leading the debaters were Bob Conner, Herb Kane and Jim Vance. These numerous organ- izations provide for the individual the opportunity of working with other students toward a co-operative and common end. C21 1946-1947 T THE heart of Cornell are those activities of a religious nature, for the school has been founded and exists on that which is essentially Christian in scope. YVith the many appropriate chapel programs, the accessibility of church services which always welcome our participation, the importance and prominence of C. C. A. and student groups, there is a consciousness of the vitality of religion around the Hilltop which Cornellians carry away with them. The high point of the yearls religious program came in the spring with Religious Emphasis XVeelc when, during a four day period, Cornellians took an opportunity to work out and discuss their spiritual problems and religious ideas with the inspiring Dr. Crane. Skeptic hours in the respective dorms, along with individual conferences brought Dr. Crane's visit down to a most personal and satisfying basis. The faculty committee, headed by Dr. Watschii Davis and generously aided by Dr. Bob hflontgomery, worked in close accord with the student committee, chairmanned by Beth Brown. Dr. Crane left the unforgettable memory of a life fully and richly lived, a challenge to every thoughtful sincere person. K V' X J n fd ITH the stimulating return of many talented veterans, the influx of unusually gifted freshmen, plus the fine progress of the upperclassmen, the various depart- ments of the Fine Arts at Cornell have reached an unprecedented peak of achievement in their work this year. This year saw the revival of the Spring Choir Tour, which made an enviable record under the artistic leadership of Franklin Leliarr, and introduced a new violinist Sam hrlanasian, to Cornell audiences. The high point of musical activities came with the hflay Festival. The guest artists were as exciting as always and the performance of the inspiring Bach B lX'Iinor Blass with the Oratorio Society and the Chicago Symphony thrilled the audience. The over-all quality of student recitals, general and solo, displayed the sincerity and ability of the students as well as the expert training of the teachers. The Little Theater hit the top with four major and six studio productions. The mastery of interpretation and ingenuity of technical work evidenced from 'l'he Barretts of Wiinpole Street and Hamlet, plus the studio performances, showed work which is comparable to that of professional companies. From the art department many students of outstanding talent and great potential- ities have emerged. ln all the various phases of art on which they concentrated their attention, such as painting, sculpturing, pottery-making, sketching, they asserted them- selves as future artists of America and the world, tangible evidence of which was provided in the numerous student exhibitions. The most outstanding element of the Fine Arts program is the enthusiasm and understanding with which it is accepted as a whole, an attribute which will certainly continue as long as the vitality and success of the student achievements maintain the level reached thus far.
