Class Prop ecy I was seated in my office, as a reporter for Life, wondering where my next feature story was coming from when a copyboy brought me the news that Harold Andrews, my old classmate had iust taken over as new editor-in-chief. Immediately the idea occurred to me to write a 'story of the Forty Niners and of their fate. When I consulted Harold, he approved of the idea and we employed the services of N B C through George Henry Bell, its business manager, in helping us to locate all of them. We soon began to get results, Joan Nowell is one of the most famous Powers Models. Designer of her clothes is Sallie Mae Gardner, and the fashion shows that she puts on are covered by Helen Barham, fashion writer for Vogue. Every class has its politicians and statesmen, but the class of '49 has some very prominent ones. Lynwood Price has iust been elected senator from North Carolina. Cecil Renfrow was his campaign manager and vote getter. Lala Mae Narron is secretary to Governor Edward Jeffreys. Ralph Glover is in business with his cousin as an interior decorator. Doris Creech and Magdeline Atkinson are nurses at Walter Reed Hospital. Sally Hinton is dieti- tian there. Jodie Strickland is a very famous horse and cow doctor and has recently established an animal clinic at Emit. Jimmy Barnes and Ross Ward are pilots for Trans-World Air Lines. Leatha Eason is stewardess for the planes they fly. Since his death, Digby O'Dell's undertaking and embalming establishment has been capably handled by Howard Avrette and J. C. Austin. Grady Thompson is pitcher and Thelbert Hocutt is first baseman for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Grady Barnes now outranks all other hillbilly stars as star of the Grand Ole Opry. Adell Creech is Raleigh's leading club woman. Her hairdresser and manicurist is Doris Kemp. Lucille Bunn is Hollywood's most glamorous movie actress. Her secretary and companion is Amanda Brantley. Betty Jean Brown is in Reno securing her second divorce. Her lawyer is Charles Boyette, who can argue enough to win anyone's case. Billy West is a research scientist on the Atomic Bomb. Charles Raines is football coach at State and was recently voted the best coach of the Southern Conference. Gilbert Crocker is acclaimed as America's most romantic poet. Geraldine Corbett is Dean of Women at Vassar, and Franklin Narron is head of the French De- partment at UNC.
