C Class History For eight years we had eagerly awaited the last lap of our journey through the land of learn- ing-our high school days. Finally, in 1945, we, the Forty-niners reached that state and set out with a grim determination for success. Mr. Freeman led the tour, and other guides assisted him along the way to be sure that we got the most out of our excursion. This first year we were somewhat fearful because of the newness of it all, but mixed with that fear was a feeling of importance and a desire to work hard to reach our goal. Miss Sullivan guided us suc- cessfully through that year in spite of the many pitfalls along the way. By the second year our enthusiasm was increasing greatly, and we were forced to add more wagons to take care of the number who joined our happy caravan. Miss Austin became our new guide, and we felt that this was a significant year of our tour, for some of our girls were selected to serve at the Junior-Senior Banquet, and other members of our group took part in the main school sports. At the end of this year, half of our journey was completed, and we were anticipating the other half with great excitement, for it promised to be even more eventful. We made a stop in June of '47, but by September we were ready to make our way into the Junior year of the trip. Miss Forsyth lighted the way for us, and we made many important stops at places of interest along the way. First we elected class officers. They were, President, Geraldine Corbett, Vice-President, Harold Andrews, Secretary, Lucille Bunn, and Treasurer, Sally Hinton. Next came a class play Aunt Susie Shoots the Works, and last we joined the group ahead of us in a Junior-Senior Banquet. Our last year in this trip was so busy that we hardly had time to know whether we were glad or sorry that the convoy must soon disband. We had as our guide, Miss Sadler, and Senior class officers were, President, Harold Andrews, Vice-President, Sally Hinton, Secretary-Treasurer, Lucille Bunn. Our first stop was to get class rings to remind us always of the happy events along the way. One night the Juniors made a campfire and gave us a banquet, and great was the celebrity, toasts, and speeches. This last year we published a great book called The Corinthian. Into it we put all the exploits and memories of our happy journey. And now, we have reached our destination. The convoy must break up and each wagon will go its way into the world to find what awaits. May we, the Forty-Niners wish for you and the entire school many more happy events and the best of luck for a successful future. SALLY HINTON, Class Historian. Class Prop ecy I was seated in my office, as a reporter for Life, wondering where my next feature story was coming from when a copyboy brought me the news that Harold Andrews, my old classmate had iust taken over as new editor-in-chief. Immediately the idea occurred to me to write a 'story of the Forty Niners and of their fate. When I consulted Harold, he approved of the idea and we employed the services of N B C through George Henry Bell, its business manager, in helping us to locate all of them. We soon began to get results, Joan Nowell is one of the most famous Powers Models. Designer of her clothes is Sallie Mae Gardner, and the fashion shows that she puts on are covered by Helen Barham, fashion writer for Vogue. Every class has its politicians and statesmen, but the class of '49 has some very prominent ones. Lynwood Price has iust been elected senator from North Carolina. Cecil Renfrow was his campaign manager and vote getter. Lala Mae Narron is secretary to Governor Edward Jeffreys. Ralph Glover is in business with his cousin as an interior decorator. Doris Creech and Magdeline Atkinson are nurses at Walter Reed Hospital. Sally Hinton is dieti- tian there. Jodie Strickland is a very famous horse and cow doctor and has recently established an animal clinic at Emit. Jimmy Barnes and Ross Ward are pilots for Trans-World Air Lines. Leatha Eason is stewardess for the planes they fly. Since his death, Digby O'Dell's undertaking and embalming establishment has been capably handled by Howard Avrette and J. C. Austin. Grady Thompson is pitcher and Thelbert Hocutt is first baseman for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Grady Barnes now outranks all other hillbilly stars as star of the Grand Ole Opry. Adell Creech is Raleigh's leading club woman. Her hairdresser and manicurist is Doris Kemp. Lucille Bunn is Hollywood's most glamorous movie actress. Her secretary and companion is Amanda Brantley. Betty Jean Brown is in Reno securing her second divorce. Her lawyer is Charles Boyette, who can argue enough to win anyone's case. Billy West is a research scientist on the Atomic Bomb. Charles Raines is football coach at State and was recently voted the best coach of the Southern Conference. Gilbert Crocker is acclaimed as America's most romantic poet. Geraldine Corbett is Dean of Women at Vassar, and Franklin Narron is head of the French De- partment at UNC. Several members of the class are in business in or near Wendell. Herbert Corbett and Charles Hocutt own and operate their own garage there. Reuben Batten has taken over the management of his father's farm. Barbara Driver has worked her way to general manager of Whitley's. Marvel Rue Sinleal is now quite happy. She finally got her man who is also connected with a garage in Wen- e . As I had my data all together and my story practically completed, l employed Burrell Cousins new typing champion, to type it off for me. ' So, with my feature story for the next issue of Life completed and handed to the editor, l sat happily down at my desk thinking how successful the '49ers were. EDNA HOCUTT, Class Prophet. CLASS SONG We'll always remember our days at Corinth High, The days filled with ioys that never die. We'll keep them as a token, recall them with a sigh, We'll always remember Corinth High. But now the time has come, When we must say adieu, We leavegour classmates and start our life anew. The world may forget you as time goes passing by But we'll always remember Corinth High. -Geraldine Corbett. CLASS POEM Sadness suddenly comes upon us, And teardrops seem to start As we realize so well The time has come to part. In our school life here together Little friendships to giants have grown. These years and months have been the happiest, That we have ever known. We've worked and played and studied hard These twelve short years together And yet there is a sweetness in it That we shall forget never. At times we thought it all unfair, That they had treated us wrong, But when we think back over it We find that we were wrong. Parting somehow brings to mind The thoughts of future things A question deeply felt by all Of what the Fates will bring. And now with sorrow we say goodbye, Our hearts with love entwine We want the best that time will bring, For the Class of forty-nine. -Gilbert Crocker.
