Uo the Gfass of 1968 I am always a little self-conscious when I compose a yearbook message. Yearbooks have a way of emerging from obscure places as the decades pass—old pictures and associations, you know—and the prose set down for eternity has a way of echoing embarrassingly back down the stairway of the years in shapes and meanings that were never intended. Certainly, I should urge you to stand erect, carry yourselves with dignity, continue your education, learn to know yourselves, to dissent responsibly, to love one another. I believe all of this. I hope you do too. But to the young, death and old age are things that happen to other people. You want to get where the action is. So—enough of preachy advice! Let me simply say from all of us teachers—who have been much more con- cerned about you than most of you now realize—to all of you seniors approach- ing graduation that we wish you happiness and good fortune along the way. You are wise indeed if you know that it isn’t going to be all success or happiness. The days of your years will be shadowed now and again by all the heart-breaking in- stances of human inadequacy and failure, including your own. When you learn that you must laugh occasionally just to keep from crying then you will have acquired a sense of proportion, a measure of wisdom, of grace and style, of self-knowledge, of sympathy for one another—and you will have come around full circle to what we were preaching about in the first place. And you will have done it pretty much on your own too. You just have to live it according to the particular drummer who is beating the cadence for you. Anyway, in this venture—sometimes rewarding, always exciting—let us again wish you good luck, courage, and beyond these, an abiding sense of humor. Sincerely, Thomas N. Palmatier
