A YEARBOOKS UESSA6E TO THE. SENIOR CLASS Early in the 17th century an English churchman, John Donne, preached a sermon en- titled ‘ Now This Bell Tolling Softly For Another . . Over the centuries since that time the concluding words have reverberated: “No man is an islande entire of itselfe.’ If we penetrate the sonorities of Donne’s Elizabethan rhetoric, we know that he speaks today, as he did then and will eternally, of our responsibility to others. Turn the pages of this yearbook and see the many things that happened to you and your school this year just because some people cared enough to make them happen: your dances, plays, sports events, tours, musical evenings, club activities — even the creation of this yearbook. Not a single one of these is required, yet some people — students and teachers — believed they were important and planned them, organized them, carried them through. You will note that these people did not despair - and they did not drop out. They saw a responsibility. As we grow up we realize more meaningfully that everything we say and do and stand for is a reflection on our families, our school, and our community. The carelessly dropped litter on every hand, the heedless remark, the fear of commitment to any difficult, the coarse indifference to the sensitivities of others: these are the signs of irresponsibility, cow- ardice, and contempt. Let us be thankful then for those students and teachers who move among us everyday, usually unrecognized, giving your life and mine a finer dimension and purpose. In some way they are more sharply attuned to tne Dei is tolling ot duty, involvement, responsi Dility. Sincerely Thomas N. Palmatier
