With the world comparatively quiet, we no longer must keep such an avid eye on battle-fronts and the serious phases of life. We do realize, of course, that we must always defend our freedom, but this year part of our attention is centered on the bright happy life of the circus. Come, join us! 3 ,1J'.,, 'iv 1 . WOOD S a student nears the end of high school he may well ask himself What have I got out of school? If you can count only so many courses passed for a diploma, you have profited only in part for there have been, along the way, many opportunities from which come the by-products of going to school. It is true that school is primarily for teaching the common skills which everyone will use in some measure no matter where he lives. These are usually called the three R's. Living in today's world has amply shown that to these should be added some ac- quaintance with other subjects such as art, music in the grades and high school and vo- cational subjects in the high school. Equally important the idea of a sound mind in a sound body persists in all school curriculums. So we have physical education. Aside from the three R's and these formal studies, it will be a great addition to your assets if you have developed two more R's. I refer to a sense of responsibility and re- spect. You may wonder what can this have to do with your future. Let me assure you it can have a great deal to do with it. The pupil who has not learned to be responsible in doing his school work on time, and done well, the pupil who has treated lightly his re- sponsibility for being in regular attendance at school, that pupil will try to carry the same attitude with him into adult life. He will learn the hard way that it does not work. The same is true of the matter of respect--respect for authority, for law, for accepted custom. The pupil who, in his school life, has not developed these assets may find it will spell lack of success in a material way sooner or later. Those who enter military service are apt to acquire this if they do not already possess it. School teachers and officials know this. There is seldom a week that they are not asked to recommend a former pupil. Is he trustworthy? Is he industrious? Is he cooperative with andloyal to supervisors and colleagues? What can you say of his regularity of attendance? His punctuality? These are among the many questions and types of information which college and prospective employers wish to know. The answers to these questions are found in your record which you have made. The school has tried to see that you have acquired skills and information. It is hoped that you have developed, as well, some of the characteristics I have mentioned because no matter how skillful you may be or how much knowledge you possess, more is needed. That will be found, Ihope, in the attitudes you have formed during your school life. Sincerely, S C Lisle D. Wood, Principal 6 essage 5.6 - A I Board of Educa ion MR. LISLE WOOD MR. LAWRENCE LANE MR. We are now stepping into a new future facing more and greater responsibilities. We always will be able to look back with pleasant memories to all the wonderful times we had together during our high school career. In September 1950, our first task as Freshman was to elect our class officers. We elected June Richley, President, Robert Brady, Vice-President, Shirley Turton, Secre- tary and June Nachtrieb, Treasurer. The highlights of the year was the Freshman Sophomore Dance with music furnished by Genesee Playboys. We made a sizable profit of 548. 00. In our Sophomore year we were joined by 25 members from East Pembroke, which increased our class to 55. Our officers were Frank Schwertoffer, President, Virginia Gerrard, Vice-President, June Richley, Secretary, and Marilyn Colby, Treasurer. Our Treasury increased when we made a profit of 342. 00 at our Freshman Sophomore Dance. The music was furnished by Wyoming Woodchoppers. Halfway up the ladder we are now upperclassmen. We began in September by electing the following officers: June Richley, Presidentg David Childs, Vice-Presidentg Agnes Fitzgerald, Secretary, and Ruth Farrington, Treasurer. A year full of fun an excitement, our first successful event was the Junior Squane Dance which boosted the treasury again. In the spring we joined the Seniors to present the Spring Ball in which we neither lost nor made money. One more step and we are now Seniors. We started our busy last year by electing the following officers to lead our class. Marek Kolkowicz, President, Barbara Smart, Vice- President, Virginia Gerrard, Secretary, and Edward Happ, Treasurer. Our first big activity was the magazine campaign. We are very proud of the new re- cord we topped by selling 52552. 50. We received a beautiful plaque for our efforts. Paul Starkweather was campaign manager and Wallace Smith, his assistant. Arlene Colby and Virginia Gerrard were team captains. The next big event was the selection of our class rings. In October we held our Senior Square Dance which was a big success, we made a profit of 5135. 00. In November we presented a three act comedy Cheaper By The Dozen directed by Miss Vant. Again we are looking forward to the Junior- Senior Ball in the spring. In Mr. Carmody's history class this year we published ahigh school handbook to help Freshman and new students become better acquainted with our school and its government. As we, the class of 1954 leave Corfu High to start a new future, we want to wish the class of 1955 all the luck and success in its Senior year and in its endeavor to carry out all the responsibilities we are leaving behind us. 12 DOUGLAS BATE S s cD0ugr 9 , I K fl I xl' xaft A Let others work, I'll do the I , nf rest. is sr Choir 2, Yearbook Staff 1, Cafeteria 1, Intramurals 1, , 1. 2,3,4, Basketball 1,2,3,4, f a , U'-, J' .5 W Baseball 1, 2, 3,4, Football X n pp 1, 2, 3, 4, Track 2 f ..
