'H fu fi ft FLORENCE SKEET CLASS OF '50 In Memoriam CREST-'Hl BOOK OF THE YEAR edited by THE STUDENTS OF CORFU HIGH CHE title of our yearbook, Crest-Hi , was chosen because Corfu is derived from Corcyra, the Greek name which means high place or the crest . Fore-:Word MERICA is not anything if it consists of each of us. It is something only if it consists of all of us: and it can consist of all of us only as our spirits are banded together in a common enterprise. That common enterprise is'the enter prise of liberty, justice, and right. --Woodrow Wilson C E, the class of 1951, are proud to dedicate this yearbook to Miss Doris Brunck, our art instructor, in appreciation for her assistance and guidance in the publication of Crest-Hi for many years, and for her unfailing aid, co-operation, and interest in our activities. 4 Dedication '-'rhfoluo-4 T LQ J 'jf Y xxx.. , ,V NN,- 165 .5 fx-N t 495 s. e LABOUR TO keep alive in your breast that little spark of celestial fire,-conscience. How- ever if you consider Americanism, as I am sure you intended, it is easier to tell of the things associated with our country than to define it. ' C HAT is America? ls it just a geographical expression naming a land mass be- tween two oceans and boasting the largest group of inland lakes, large river sys- tems, plains, mountains and all the variety of physical features associated with them? ls it not also an ideal of political and religious freedom, of freedom from want and the right to develop one's life as he is able and chooses without forgetting the duties and responsibilities that are always linked with these freedoms? This notion seems to have gripped the minds of men since the founding of our government. Where else could a man by character and ability alone become a captain of industry or rise to a high po- sition of leadership in any phase of life? In what other country has the opportunity for education been so available? Every item of equipment in building that are modern in every sense and staffed with fully trained teachers is the rule. Even transportation must be provided for pupils in our district who have never known any other kind of school. The opportunity of freedom has become so much a part of the way of the American way of life that, if one pauses to consider he might well ask himself Do I appreciate all this? and, lsn't there the possibility that because of taking too much for granted, I may lose my way of life? Thomas Paine expressed it concisely when he said What we obtain too cheaply we esteem too lightly . The world situation now demands that we do consider this, and ask ourselves how we may fit into the national need. Most of you were in the seventh and eight grade when World War ll ended. I am sure that all of you can remember it called for everyone to do something important to the national effort. It may have been the purchase of War stamps, raising a victory garden, or collecting scrap metal. Each had a job to do and did it, for in war or peace, Americanisrn demands that in return for our freedoms we also accept and perform the' duties that help to perpetuate those freedoms. That is the essence of Americanism. If the cold war worsens, you may again be needed. That you will do your part I am confident. Sincerely, 5 Administration 1513? 7 PRINCIPAL, C0111-'U PRINCIPAL, EAST PEMBROKE f L f 'igi . 3 Ae' uf E E d 1 . .F . R qVEmWWj. M i L m,,i ' to 1.A x1- A , Q 'if 5 M x 4' , if fat ,. MR. BUCKLAND. 1 I Class Histor S we leave our school and go out into the world to face new and greater responsibilities, we can look back with deep appreciation on the wonder ful times we have had during our high school career. Our class was organized in September 1947 and our first act as high school students was to elect class officers: Donald Anawald, President, Sylvia Tojdowski, Vice Presidentg Lola Boyd, Secretary, and Douglas Lotz, Treasurer. Together with the Sophomore Class, we sponsored a successful Hal- loween dance to the music of Kenny Lowe and his Ex-Checks. The following year we were joined by the East Pembroke sophomores, and under the leadership of our class officers Rudolph Holnbeck, President Diane Kelsey, Vice-Presidentg Marjorie Siebert, Secretary, and Donald Anawald, Treasurer, we began to try our wings--venturing into partici- pation in many extra-curricular activities, including band, choir, football, basketball, baseball and the speaking contest. The event of the year was our Freshman-Sophomore square dance, where we were slightly bedraggled at its conclusion. We also had a booth at the F. H. A. carnival from which we realized a good profit. As proud upperclassmen we began our Junior year by electing the following officers: Alvin Guard, Presidentg Donald Anawald, Vice-Presi- dentg Norman Groth, Secretary, and Richard Eick, Treasurer. We pub- lished four issues of our Junior Paper Corfutopia , with the assistance of Mr. Lamb, our advisor. In addition to our square dance, we provided an enchanted evening for all those who attended our Junior Prom on May ll, even though we did lose money on this venture. In September 1950, our hopes were fulfilled--we were finally Seniors. Among the activities which we sponsored in this busy last year were our square dance, a magazine campaign headed by Janice Brown, Diane Kelsey, and general chairman, Rudolph Holnbeck, in which we sold over S2150 worth and received a beautiful plaque for our efforts, and our Sen- ior Play, SAVED BY THE BELLE which was presented to the public on December 5 at East Pembroke and on December 6 at Corfu. This year we replaced the traditional Senior Ball by a combined Junior-Senior Ball which was held on April 27, with the music provided by Sunny Dow and his Orchestra. The expenses were shared by both classes. We hope that this will become an annual affair at Corfu High. We are now ending our journey through high school--ending one journey but beginning another. What the future holds for us we do not know, but we do know that we shall do our best to succeed. IZ OX fx C-5 fiat 'N ,X 'X- WE HOLD these truths to be self- evident, that all men are created equal. S Juniors we began our first year as upperclassmen last September. We now have 40 members in our class. During the year we were joined by Bruce Des Camp, and Gloria Hale, while Patricia Golding and Donald Fouchie left. One of our greater undertakings was that of publishing the Junior Paper, the Corfutopia. We learned a great deal from the four issues we turned out, which were all successful financially. On January 26 we sponsored a round and square dance with the music played by the Wyoming Woodchoppers. We made S55 and had a great deal of fun. For the big social event of this year, we joined the Seniors in sponsoring the Spring Ball on April Z7 with Sonny Dow and his Orchestra furnishing the music The biggest job of all, that of prepar- ing to be a Senior, was completed with the passing of our final exams in June. This aim has been faith- fully and successfully fulfilled by the twenty-five girls who make up this club under the capable, expert guidance of their new advisor, Miss Marjorie Holland. Meetings are held once a month in the library. Lectures on fine arts have been pleasant features of several of these meetings, including ones by Miss Denton and Mr. Edmonds. The group has had three parties during this 1950-51 club year. Among these parties have been a Christmas Party, a Valentine's Day fete, and a St. Patrick's Day celebration. The latter was highlighted by the performance of a play written and directed by Doris Mallory and put on by a select- ed cast of members. The season will be crowned by a gala spring affair in June. CHE Future Homemakersu motto for the year was 'Toward New Horizons and our purpose, to pro- ' mote a growing appreciation of the joys and satisfac- tions of hornernaking and to foster the development of creative leadership in home and community. One of our first activities of the year was attend- ing the F. H. A. Rally at East Aurora on November 6. Our other projects included selling potato chips at noontime, distributing pictures for the ABC Photo Service, and selling Christmas cards. On January 21 we sent Anne O'Neill to represent us in the County Cherry Pie Contest. The Genesee Playboys furnished the music for the round and square dance we spon- sored on April 6. We enjoyed a successful year, socially and finan- cially, and we are saving our earnings toward the day when we can send our delegates to the state and na- tional conventions next year. They presented two radio broadcasts on The Area Schools Present program over WBTA, Batavia. The first program fea- tured the song Madame Jeanette . The second broadcast featured the songs of Stephen Foster. Rudolph Holnbeck was narrator on both occasions. The Christmas pageant was scheduled for December 21, but school was not held that day because of lack of water and it was never presented--to the disappointment of the cast as well as the entire student body. The choir took part in the Genesee County Festival, which was held at Corfu this year, and also at the State Music Festival.
