It not only played at all the football games, to help urge the team on to victory and to entertain the fans, but it appeared again in the Los Angeles Coliseum at a Pacific Coast conference grid game and once more was selected to play at the Shrine East-West contest in San Francisco. The above picture shows the band, led by the hiqhstepping maiorettes, marching down Whitley Avenue in the snake paradesnd football rally iust preceding the opening ot the local qrr season. A. JAMES MARSEE Director Soundingef AND: ln his sixth year at CUl-lS, A. James Marsee, band director, molded the nucleus ot last year's excellent group, plus 26 treshmen, into one ot the tinest all-around marching and concert bands ever to be produced at Corcoran high. These bandsmen were taced with the challenge ot upholding the high musical standards set by previous local music makers--that ot receiving nothing but a superior rating at the valley section ot the Calitornia Music Educators Associa- tion music testival, held this year at Exe- ter. Atter a month ot hard preparation, these highly touted musicians accom- plished iust this, with the utmost ot musi- cal and technical slcill. The band was always on hand to play tor the pep assemblies and tor many school activities. The marching band, which pertormed at tootball games, pa- rades, and other civic tunctions, was by tar the best ever assembled. The intri- cate marching maneuvers that were per- tormed with such protessional precision were acclaimed by many people. Con- stant comments trom the tans were that they had seen a lot ot college units that weren't as good. Corcoran was well rep- resented when the band made its annual trip to the East-West Shrine game in San Francisco, and to the USC-Oregon State 'Football contest in the Los Angeles coli- seum. A total ot S620 was raised in the annual sale ot band calendars tor the purpose ot purchasing new unitorms, which untor- tunately did not arrive until April l. The tollowing day the student musicians pa- raded clown Whitley Avenue, helping to open the Spring Festival in Corcoran. Rutus Wood, a senior, tor the third straight year led the band in the sale ot band calendars and listings. Eight seniors will be lost through grad- uation, but with many students with play- ing experience up trom iunior high, the CUl-lS band next year should be about 65 strong.
