l Faculty Love of Li e The Special Education Department at Corcoran consists of a well organized staff and a basic curriculum which reflects the needs of each student. The courses, which are both interest- ing and enjoyable, are designed with the student's needs, in- terests and abilities in mind. Some of the courses available are as follows: typing, reading lab, mathematics, family life education, and vocational education programs in auto me- chanics, child care, building trades, clerical practices, health services, and occupational training. This year, as in the past few years, we have been most fortu- nate to have as head of this department Helena Ozer. She has taught here at Corcoran for eleven years. Not only is she an excellent teacher, but she also finds time to be an advisor for the Glen Echo, Corcoranls yearbook. Helena Ozer Add the unique teaching abilities of William Rowland, Dennis Loftus, Karen Tallent, and Kathleen Watson, and you will certainly come to the conclusion that this staff is not only the best, but the nicest. Meeting the individual needs of special education students is a com- bined effort of both the guidance department and the teachers in- volved. Helena Ozer and Herman Jones also take time to advise the yearbook staff. - . ,-,,, MMMWWV ,,,,,,,, ,,. mills. Dennis Loftus Caddie Watson Karen Tallent 4 Bill Rowland Keith Gage

Sam Rifkin Tom Goodhart Betty Weller Tom Godwin Hospital Veteran Sam Ritkin and heart-throbber Tom Goodhart teach Health and Family Life, a required course. They help stu- dents to become familiar with nutrition, the effects of drugs on the human body, and the psychology of living. Once students receive parental permission, they take the Fam- ily Life segment of the course which involves self-awareness and the understanding of others. Through the help of movies, students are able to learn more about birth, pregnancy, and venereal disease. Family Life develops the students' ability to cope with the difficulties of a relationship, and prepares them for their role as a spouse, parent, and individual. Head of the department, Sam Rifkin, spends his spare time bowling golfing, and Uloafingf' Tom Goodhart enjoysjogging, bicycling, playing basketball, and chewing gum. Concentrating intently on his English assignment, John Billo reads about life in the year 2000. The pain, the nagging headache, and the swollen glands are enough to drive any student to the nurse's office. If it weren't for our lovely, compassionate nurse, Betty Weller, you wouldn't be able to bear it. Some of her other duties include transporting the handicapped students to assemblies and supervising their use of the univer- sal gym. She keeps records on every student and handles med- ication for some of them. Besides taking care of sick T.J.C. students, Betty Weller likes to read in a quiet place, cross country ski, swim and sail. Enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of the Media Center, Beverley Mind- nich and Louie Dibiase discuss a topic of concern. O 81

WW' Bill DeLuCCia Claire Carpenter Beverley Mindnich Eager to see what is happening, Adana Reese inadvertently poses for the Glen Echo. Mickey De Vesty Jean Glanister Truth or Consequences Corcoran's Media Center offers the best selection of books, periodicals, and audio visual materials and equipment in the Syracuse City Schools. Reading or just plain thinking can be comfortable while sitting in one of the numerous lounge chairs placed about the completed center. With its friendly and casual mood, the Media Center often becomes a place of conversation, joking and gossip rather than one of study and silence. But, under the strict and ever watchful eye of the Media Center staff, those who create too much chatter and general chaos are often banished to the dark and forbid- ding environs of the cafeteria. For those students who seek assistance in completing their assignments, the staff is always ready to help with informa- tion and suggestions. Mrs. Carpenter and Mrs. DeVesty, the library aids, have had many years of experience in school libraries and are a wealth of information in the reference and fiction areas. We are proud of our Media Center, and have every right to be!
