V Battl 0 the Sexes At the head of the Physical Education team is Mr. Huff- man, and what a team he has! In the starting positions are Jac kie Smith and Don Churchill. They do their best to start the Sophomores out right. Coming in the No. 2 positions are Bar- bara Downs and Tony DiBel1o. Their combined efforts contin- ue to keep the Juniors on their toes. Rounding out the team Janet Bluem and Ken Huffman. Their much needed talents add the final touch to the finished product-fthe Seniors. Many times their jobs are not as easy as one thinks. Teaching Gym is not just taking roll, choosing sides, and playing games. These dedicated staff members have to arrange schedules that coincide with each other so that two classes won,t be taking swimming or using the same equipment at the same time. Then there is the constant problem of students cutting class. Many times these cuts add up and a student ends up taking Gym over again. The energetic people of our Physical Education Department give up some of their spare time to coach Corcoran's athletic teams. Coaches of the girls, sports are: Jackie SmithfJ.V. A noth r World iave you ever wondered what it would be like if you lived in nother country? Students who are interested in studying ,bout the people, language, and culture in distant lands hould familiarize themselves with the courses offered in Trench and Spanish. Both of these subjects are taught at Cor- oran by educators who have a deep interest in the cultures if people who live outside of the United States. Xlthough it is not always easy to learn a foreign language, Tlorence Michaels, Susan Spadafore, and Karen Steiger make Trench and Spanish come alive. In the beginning classes, vo- abulary development and grammar are emphasized. However once a student masters this, he or she has the opportunity to study about the culture of French and Spanish speaking peo- ple. It is interesting to learn about the differences among peo ple in foreign countries and then to reflect and see how much all people are truly alike. Although there are only two teachers each in the music and art departments, they work industriously to make certain that all students find their courses meaningful and worth- while. Students may take these courses as an elective or for a sequence if special permission is given. Our hats are off to the faculty of these departments. Sam Rifkin Tom Goodhart Betty Weller Tom Godwin Hospital Veteran Sam Ritkin and heart-throbber Tom Goodhart teach Health and Family Life, a required course. They help stu- dents to become familiar with nutrition, the effects of drugs on the human body, and the psychology of living. Once students receive parental permission, they take the Fam- ily Life segment of the course which involves self-awareness and the understanding of others. Through the help of movies, students are able to learn more about birth, pregnancy, and venereal disease. Family Life develops the students' ability to cope with the difficulties of a relationship, and prepares them for their role as a spouse, parent, and individual. Head of the department, Sam Rifkin, spends his spare time bowling golfing, and Uloafingf' Tom Goodhart enjoysjogging, bicycling, playing basketball, and chewing gum. Concentrating intently on his English assignment, John Billo reads about life in the year 2000. The pain, the nagging headache, and the swollen glands are enough to drive any student to the nurse's office. If it weren't for our lovely, compassionate nurse, Betty Weller, you wouldn't be able to bear it. Some of her other duties include transporting the handicapped students to assemblies and supervising their use of the univer- sal gym. She keeps records on every student and handles med- ication for some of them. Besides taking care of sick T.J.C. students, Betty Weller likes to read in a quiet place, cross country ski, swim and sail. Enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of the Media Center, Beverley Mind- nich and Louie Dibiase discuss a topic of concern. O 81
