It offers the students an individualized program geared toward their special strengths and weaknesses in the basic competencies necessary for a high school diploma. Students learn certain life skills that are necessary and practical to surviving in to- dayas world through discus- sions, lectures and demon- strations. Though our hall moniters are never armed with more than a smile, their very presence make the halls seem less deserted during classes. They laugh l with us when we drop our books, kid us when our ex- cuses for getting upstairs aren,t good enough and worry with us when student emotions run wild. Unfortunately, many of us don't appreciate them until the locker thefts rise and a girl gets sent on a lonely er- rand during a class. But come now, no longer fear, our trusty hall moniters are always near! Karen Walsh

T e Guiding Light The Corcoran Guidance Department is perhaps the busiest department in the school. Not only do the counselors help students-with their school related decisions, but the dedicated staff of Patrick Walsh, Herman Jones, Rita Contino, Paul Converse, and secretary Marie Suatoni handle transcripts, col- lege applications, and class placement, as well as help students in other areas of student life. But their job doesn't stop at school re- lated affairs. They are just what their title implies-counselors who are there to guide students in making important decisions that will influence their lives after their high school years. For your guidance, for your counsel- ing, for your understanding, we thank you. I 'fa ,ra lx! 44 ' ,L Paul Converse Patrick Walsh 00 3 f Rita Contino Herman Jones in if me M 'Q A1 if

T The head of this year's English Depart- ment is Marilyn Laufe. She has taught here for the past six years and says that she is very pleased to be a part of our school. Being chairperson of one of the largest departments at Corcoran occupies a great deal of her time, She is also kept busy outside of school by cooking, ski- ing, and serving on the Board of Salt City Playhouse. The English Department stresses read- ing, speaking, listening, and writing skills. A reading lab is made available to students so that they may raise their reading levels and also increase their speed. Marilyn Laufe feels that this is an effective adjunct to the Eng- lish program. There is a wide variety of classes of- fered to students. If a student is college- bound, his interests may be in the Col- lege Prep class or the S.U. College Eng- lish class. ln S.U. English you may earn up to six credit hours toward your college education. In these two classes the students are not only learning gram mar and improvement of their writing e Crosswits skills, but by the end ofthe year each student will also have had the pleasure of reading one or more of Shakespearels plays. One English teacher, Maria Rapp seems to leave a lasting impression on all of her students. She has a genuine interest in the works of Shakespeare and she shares her enthusiasm with everyone. If a student is searching for a class with an excellent teacher who also is a very special person, he should go directly to room 212 Maria Rapp says that here at TIC there is a class to suit everyone's needs. For students who have other interests, the department offers many choices. Two ofthe most popular seem to be Comic Spirit which is taught by Sandy Phippin and Films and Flicks which is taught by Joe Peppone. All of the English teachers here at TJC are excellent. Not only do they show interest, but they themselves are very interesting people. They enjoy travel- ing, writing, cooking, and believe it or not, mountain climbing.
