va Q2 Clubs and Activiti Have you ever wondered where all the delicious candy, striking T-shirts, and essential school supplies that can be purchased at the school store come from? Who selects these products? Who decides on the quanity to be ordered? Who works in the store? These are the responsibilities of the members ofthe Distributive Education Clubs of Amer- ICH. ln order to be a member of this organi- zation, a student must be enrolled in a Marketing class. If you are interested in learning marketing and management, speak to Mrs. Curry, advisor, or any member ofthe DECA Club. Enjoying himself at Rosie O'Grady Night, Richard Plummer, president of DECA club and the evenings photographer, takes some time out to decide what pictures he will snap next. Stocking the shelves and preparing for the opening of the school store, Lorre Brown and Lendell Dovvdell check to see that every- thing is running efficiently. Enjoying the scenic view from the Rez, Madeline Leyden, advisor of the Forensics Club, spends many afternoons in quiet meditation. Yaht ee Corcoranis Forensic Team got off to a great start, capturing first place in their first competition. The team was organized this year for the first time. Corcoran's team joins students from many high schools who compete individually against each other. Categories vary, from writing and delivering an original speech on any topic to mem- orizing and acting out a scene from a play, or orally inter- preting a poem or story. Madeline Leyden, Virginia Maroney, and Barbara Sorenson, a teacher from Shea, dedicated time to listen to and advise mem- bers, visibly producing a promising group. By competing with CBA, Henningergand Nottingham, about ten Corcoran students match wits and test their speed on all types of Math problems. Algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and pre-calculus are all used in competition questions. Com- petitors must answer within a specified time limit. Each school has up to five people competing individually on each question with one point awarded for each studentis right answer. The team with the highest score wins. At the end of each season, Corcoran has a big meet with all the schools in the area. Last year Tim Reed, a senior, placed in the top fifteen in the state meet. It all adds up to alot of challenging fun. 1' front row: Sue Stone, Laurie Walker, Tim Reed, Von Campbell. 2nd row: Mary Fiumano, Ganesh Sundaram, George Gowen, Glen Sturge John Barott, Andy Eccles. The Future Business Leaders Association chapter at Corcoran is open to those stu- dents who are involved in business courses. The club was established to help students develop leadership abilities, provide more direction in the intelligent choice of busi- ness occupations, and improve the stand- ards for entrance into these occupations. Members participate in contests with other FBLA chapters at the Annual State Lead- ership Conference. Thirty-five exams are offered ranging from bookkeeping and ac- counting, to shorthand and public speak- ing. City meetings are held four times a year and district meetings are conducted twice a year featuring guest speakers who discuss business opportunities. Some of the fund raising activities that FBLA had this year were the selling of can- dy sticks, scented pens, and Christmas gift items. Everybody is a homemaker, says Con- nie Ulasewicz, the Future Homemakers of America advisor. The common image of a homemaker is a mother with six children, doing the wash, making the meals, and cleaning the house. The FHA club is trying to change that image and show the stu- dents of Corcoran what is the meaning of the word homemaker. Members define homemaker as anyone trying to live in a nuturing, self-fulfilling environment. This role will differ among different life styles. The FHA club has been involved in a big fund raising event in addition to n few charity events. Corcoranls FHA club is a Service Organization, they make Easter baskets for the children's hospital. The New York State FHA has a project to raise money to build a school through the Peace Corps in South America. They hope Corcoran will get involved in helping their state wide organization. ii
