l tS Spor Gentl Jocks Go 7- It's the start of a new season and out come the palmguards, the ripped T- shirts, and the chalk. Then begin the exercisesg the sit-ups, the chin-ups, the handstand push-ups, and the dips. Floor ex-hand-springs and twists, side horsewthe pommels in the wrong place, high bar-burning at your hands, long horse-flying at spring time, paral- lel bars-handstands and bruised arms, and rings-muscle ups and steady as she goes. After the first season loss to power- house Henninger, Corcoran went on to win the rest of its seven meets and fin- ished second place in the CNYCL. Lead- ing the way was Senior John Anderson, who specialized in vaulting and floor- ex. Backing up with five performances were Seniors Paul McKenna fall-round -rings, high bar, and vaultingj and Joe Dadey Cside horse and p-barsj. Also contributing greatly to the team's suc- cess were Senior Lyndell Dowdell ffloor-ex. and vaultingj, Senior Glenn Sturge Cside horsej, Junior Bill Cogh- lan Crings, p-bars, and high barj, and Sophomores Dave Scholl Ch-bar and ringsj and Tom Younis Chfbar and ringsj. In their last meet, the team scored a school record high of 96 points, and' in the cityls meet at Henninger, Corcor- an,s gymnasts made a fine showing in assuring themselves second place. The team is coached by ex Henninger and Northern Michigan star gymnast Rich Macheda, who is still to be found twisting and toying graciously about the equipment. John Anderson had the elite opportun- ity to compete in the state meet, held at SUNY an Purchase. John finished a very respectable ninth . Congratulations to the gymnasts and their coach on a fine season! In mid-air, flying with great preflight, all- around gymnast tworks all six eventsl John Anderson performs his handspring vault ver- sus Watertown before a home crowd. John placed first in vaulting in the City's Meet, and made it to the State Meet with his gra- cious vault after finishing second in the Sectional Meet. Completely in control and displaying good form, Dave Scholl executes an LH in warm- ing up for the ring event in the Cityls Meet at Henninger. His effort helped the team fin- ish second in the meet. ..' X P Stretching upward in preparing to pop for his handspring vault is Paul McKenna during the Watertown meet, which Corcoran won. Paul's performances were valuable to the team and he placed in the top five in three of the events at the City's Meet.

n the Running Receiving the baton from Tony Mitchell, Steve McGaff continues to hold the lead in the relay. Corcoranis track team finished with a record of 3-4. An abundance of sophomores assures later victories. Standouts on this year's team are Steve McGaff, a versatile runner who's specialty is in middle distance but can also do a variety of long distance corps. Long jumper, Anthony Mitchell, also has a variety of specialties. He currently holds the title of in- door track champion. Paul McKenna, pole vaulter, has in- creased title hopes by placing himself in Section 1 ll stand- ings throughout the year. Darius Davis, a junior, is also of value to Corcoranls track team. His ability was displayed by winning the shot-put event while participating in other areas. Darell Payne, Anthony Travis and Greg Bouldin scored in a variety of events and pull- ed off many upsets at the City League Meet. Junior hurdler Ron Ross, also a sprinter, broke the standing hurdle record with impromptu effort. Carl Kastler's initial season of walk- ing, a new track event, finished sixth in sectional competition. Runners that are sure to be of value in coming seasons are Bi Coghlan, James McGriff, Steve Davis, Scott Benjamin and Bob Snyder. Coach John Holm will undoubtedly possess a valuable squad in the season to come. Coach Holm discusses his past season and his hopes for the future at the Sports Banquet. Perfectionist Paul McKenna positively pole vaults past the pole. ll Seemingly airborn, Darius Davis extends his legs for the landing.
