. . . But They Got Buried Anywa Corcoranls ,77 edition football team didnit quite live up to their early season expectations. The C.N.Y.C. football writ- ers gave the young Cougars good odds to put in a strong run for the title contention after a fluke loss to highly regarded Rome Free Academy. The Rome Free Academy loss seemed to set the stage for the entire season. After being down by two touchdowns at halftime, Corcoran rallied back to tie the game at 14-14 with three minutes left in the contest, But a lucky interception had R.F.A. winning the game with no time remaining on the clock. After hard fought losses to Auburn and Henninger, the Cou- gars came up with a well earned 14-O victory over Watertown. Pete Jenkins led a defense which intercepted four passes. Ed Dunn and Darius Davis had the others. While on the offense, Cougar backs Ron Ross and Greg Bouldin ran well behind the blocking of Mike Burger, Ed Dunn, Jim Brien and Joe Beam- ish. After the Watertown win, Corcoran lost a hard fought game with unbeaten, ninth ranked in the state, Nottingham. The Cougars out played their counterparts in every aspect of the game except the score. Most city league coaches agreed that Corcoran was the team with a lot of talent but couldn't put it together. The Cougars placed four men on the C.N.Y.C.L. all star team. Among them were Charles Jackson fdefensive tacklej, Anthony Tra- vis Cdefensive backj, Ed Dunn COffensive tackle and line back- erj, and Pete Jenkins fdefensive backj. Cougar mentor Tony DiBello looks to a bright future as he returns 18 out of 30 players on this year's squad. Key return- ees include Ron Ross, Darell Payne, Charles Jackson, Mike Burger, and Jim Brien. Showing the opponents that he really knows the game, Quarterback, Mark Bono carries the ball to the end zone. Follow the Leader Corc0ran's Junior Varsity Basketball team was slightly less than victorious this year, but the effort and team spir- it was present from game to game. The Cougar hoopsters were led this year by teacher assistant Kevin Stark. A rookie at coaching, Mr. Stark led the team through a trying and challenging sea- son. Many new talents were exposed this year, and the coaches have great hopes for the varsity basketball team of 1978-79. It is difficult to pick out one or two players as being the teams finest, but admiration has been ex- pressed toward the playinghstyles of Steve Robarge, Bernard Salandy, Steve Coleman, and Greg Newsom. Despite the fact that the Cougars were not tri- umphant this year, we all have faith in them and anticipate next yearis numer- ous victories. An opposing player looks on as Corcoran's Cougars score two points. Talking to his men about a new play which they are about to execute, Coach Kevin Stark explains the last minute details. Jumping high to make 3 point, the Cougars Shooting clean from the corner takes a great know that the score will be close. deal Of athletic ability' QQIG r S Q-1.-f
