Kevin Shanahan Sharon Shaw How Do Ya' FIGURE? It never ceases to amaze brand-new Geometry students how figures that they have been taught years ago are quickly picked apart, proven and rebuilt. A square has four equal sides, right? Wrong! Nothing is equal until it can be proven. But how? A.S.A., S.S.S. or S.A.S. could mean any number of things. Just when you come to the conclusion that S.A.S. means Sides Are Stupid, the teacher decides that required theorems No. l-5 are going to be on Fridayis test. soiotuoqdog Constructions are another foreign sub-topic. Many kids end the course never having figured out how to quit stabbing themselves with a compass or how to construct an angle equal to a given angle. Who decided what would be given or not given, anyway? How did those textbook people manage to give just enough information to completely baffle you and still leave enough for the teacher to prove the proof with ease? It is highly unlikely that you will remember the formula for the area of a trapezoid for the rest of your days, but you will probably come away with a new respect for geometric figures and also a new respect for those who understand them. There are many practical ideas that you may remember. Imagine not knowing if your larger than lifesize memorial statue of Elvis Presley will tit through the door of your dorm! How do you find the diagonal? How do you figure? ii
