Mrs. Joy C. Perry 'li Q The following pages of this memory album will give the reader an inside look at Corbett High School. The Cohimore Staff hopes that the bookawill present a thorough account of the academic year of 1960-1961. The division pages introducing sections throughout the COHIMORE are decorated with scenes taken from our own Columbia River Gorge. The particular scenes that have been chosen for these pages and designed by Mike Hager are probably familiar to you. They are places which most of us are proud to claim as attractions found in our own backyard . AML ii? fn' Crown Point L9 X TABLE 0F CONTENTS ACADEMICS ------------------------------- CLASSES ---- --- ACTIVITIES ------ --- ORGANIZATIONS ---- --- ATHLETICS ------ --- INDEX ------ ---- Our lives have resembled and will con- tinue to resemble a vast lake that is slowly filling with the stream of our years. As the waters creep surely up- ward the landmarks of the past are one by one submerged. But there always will be memories to lift their heads above the tide until finally the lake is overflowing. One of the most outstand- ing of these memories, probably lifting its head highest, will be the remembrance of Corbett High School and for all that it represents. If each and every one of us could examine this memory more closely, we would see teachers and friends each extending a guiding hand and facing us with an expression of concern. We would see the members of our community who have long been our symbols of inspiration and support. Last but not least, we would see our parents striving so hard to make us better citizens. After our high school years, our relation- ship with Corbett High and the community will diminish slowly as a thing of the pastg only memories such as are contained in this book will continue to exist. Secretary MRS. HELEN POST Clerk MRS. ETHEL KIRKHAM The Cohimore staff believes that the school cooks and custodians should receive recognition within this section. Without clean buildings and nourish- ing food the academic program would be hindered. Not pictured are cooks MRS. VENABLE and MRS. HUNT, custodians MR. BURNHAM and MR. MCMORRAN. 5 1 ,.. Academics and Administration Superintendent Arthur Hiemstra heads the Corbett school district and serves also as principal of the high school. Acting as coordinator and director in such matters as school personal and public relations, Mr. Heimstra has led the faculty through two years of continuous expansion. He also works with the school board in formulating budgets and policies for the school. 'Ni' 'S? This page is sponsored by: J. C. PENNEY INC. BUTLER'S VARIETY STORE 19 N.E. Powell 133-'I37 N. Junior Class The J unior-Senior Banquet was the biggest project undertaken by the Junior class this year. In order to make the banquet a success, money was needed. Selling concessions, holding a turkey drawing at Thanksgiving and a candy drawing for Valentine's Day and pocketing half the proceeds from the Junior-Senior class play proved to be successful money-making projects. Of course, studies, clubs, athletics, parties, and other activi- ties took up much of the timeg nevertheless, the class enjoyed it and is looking forward to another busy year as seniors. Every person needs an occasional change in mood and tempo. Pageantry, dances, plays, organized effort and contests, honors and even a formal commencement add memorable touches to high school days making them something special. f f The most colorful pageant of the football season this year was enlivened by the Card's victory over the Gaston Greyhounds earlier in the evening. The event of October 7 ended home football games but added to the team's anticipation of victory in meeting with their opponents in forthcoming battles. The presentation of the Homecoming Court and the crowning of Queen Helen I marked the highlights of the evening dance. The princesses were escortedby the presidents of their classes while football captain, Claude Dhone, accompanied Queen Helen to the throne. X3 fl' we k .1 is 1.4 lf?aQ'E ' mi K if k j . A gay, pretty student, Miss Helen Grahn, reigned over the homecoming festivities. Helen's personality shone in a ravishing smile as she accepted her sovereignity. Miss Grahn is very active in school activities. This year she holds the positions of Student Body Treasurer and Girls' League Secretary. Much of her time is consumed by the student council and chorus. . -434' .f si Q HOMECOMING COURT, LEFT TO RIGHT: Freshmen Princess and Escort, Carol Kerslake and Jerry Whiteg Junior, Irene Cutter and Steve Postg Queen Helen I and Claude Dhoneg Senior, Judy Woodard and Larry Beattyg Sophomore, Ginger Roley and Kit Houck. Dress- up Day fleftj brought students in their Sun- day best and Crazy Hat Day frighty en- couraged them to dis- play some fancy headgear. The long winter days became shorter with the arrival of the Girls' League annual Twirp Week in February. Beatnik Day, Red and White Day, Crazy Hat Day, Clash Day, and Dress-Up Day, were the titles that headed each activity of the special week. Many new personalities were discovered during Twirp Week and among them was Bruce Houck caught in this crazy hat Qleftj. Beatnik Day inspired Jack Goertz fbelow lefty to pound out a beat on the bongos and to throw on some flashy clashy clothes fbelow righty. The 2nd annual Science Fair stirred the interests of many scholars. Students Qtopj experiment with a Benham's color disk, a project by Diana Taylor and Mary Christensen. In the background, Don MacKay and Terry Monroe Qmiddlej prepare an experiment with the titration tube. Jim Ellis and Steve Crampton fbottomj set up a gas dis- charge tube for display. and Accomplishment With the entrance of many fascinating displays and projects, the Corbett Science Fair of April 12, demonstrated a new mark in scientific achievement within our com- munity. Under the sponsorship of Via Science Club the fair's demonstrations embraced a wide variety of subjects which interested scores of observers. The Student Body, with the aid of the student council, governed the school activities with a maximum of discretion and intelligence. The school year was a successful and profitable one. To aid in the undisputed good fortune was an effective student governing body, comprised of twenty-one individuals. Probably the most outstanding service performed by the student body was the sponsoring of the school's cheerleaders at the Corvallis Summer Cheerleading School. Profits from this investment were secured through the enjoyment of advanced yells and routines. This page is sponsored lay: COPELAND LUMBER CO. MEALEY'S .IEWELERS Lumber and Building Materials N. Many highlights throughout the school year made the efforts of the FTA successful. Among these achievements were several money-making projects and a trip to La Grande for the annual Oregon State FTA Convention. To attain some teaching experience, the members of the FTA also had a Student Teaching Day which permitted the Future Teachers to take over the regular instructors' duties. This plan was not only worthwhile but also very enjoyable. This page is sponsored by: FANCHER'S AUTO PARTS FLOWERS BY MALCOMS E. Corbett's 1960-61 wrestling squad was one of the most powerful teams in that sport since its beginning in 1955. The men enjoyed a 10 win, 3 loss season record. Three wrestlers, Dick Goodling, Larry Beatty and Jerry Buss earned the privilege to participate in the state meet. However, two of the team's top five wrestlers, Steve Crampton and Terry Ayles did not go to state. Steve, who had a season record of 13W and 1L was unable to compete in the district tournament because of an injured shoulder. Larry Beatty and Jerry Buss placed a fine fourth in the State A-2, B Tournament. Dick Goodling nearly captured the crown in his weight class.
