V. Strong and Read to Pla I! Underclass Spiritlll Action at the scrimmage line takes its toll. This year the l980 Junior Varsity Colts have provided several spectacular games by coming from behind in the second quarter to win. The game against Ely was exemplary of the J.V. strategy. During the first half, Ely put 6 points on the board, but the J.V. Colts came roaring back at the end of the half by blocking a kick off. Tom McPherson ran the ball over the goal line from the four yd. line. The point after was good, and the Colts were leading 7 to 6. ln the third quarter, the Ely team scored to take the lead I3 to 7. Then the defense, coached by Tony Shaw, shut down the Ely team for the rest of the game. Quarterback Jonnie Sadar engin- eered a long drive, culminated by a surging dive from Tom Martin. J.V. Afternoon students don't have much going for them. Because of the schedule they can't get jobs and do the things morning students can. But they do have their very own J.V. Colts. lt's a new experience for the freshmen as they enter high school for their first year. So the J.V. team serves as an ice breaker when all the underclassmen go to a game and get behind their team and have a great time. J.V. gets back to position. I4O J.V. Tharpe concentrates on the running game. Coach Tony Meere stated at the beginning of the season that his returning players Steve Reynolds and Kevin Brooks were standouts for fled- gling Colts. as this year was a rebuilding one. New players who contributed to an outstanding defense were: Alex Caldwell, cornerback, Jeff Smith, safetyt and Chris MacDonald, defensive tackle. Some of the offensive players, such as John Sadar, quarterback, Tom Canizio, Chris Wing, and Tom Martin, were, according to Coach Meer, part of the bonding factor of a good strong football team.
