Colts Beat Creek For Winnin Season Steve Porter gets set to go. This was the first year that Bob Cato was head coach of the varsity football team. It was also the Colts first winning year. That speaks a lot for a new coach: Cato overcame injuries to key players, such as the ankle of Pete Kraft, who played halfback, right wing, and defensive back. At one point, just as the team made it's turn around to win five consecutive games, the Colts had six players out with colds and five with knee injuries. Coach Cato had the benefit of an excellent coaching staff this year. The staff members were Craig Bankston, Duke Chandler, Ron Link, and Steve Maltby. I34 Varsity Football Colts concentrate on the game. Football players had dedicated families. wsu
