t is with honor and pride that I dedicate this cruise and decommissioning book for USS CORAL SEA CCV-431. As we write the last chapter of CORAL SEA'S magnificent career, we say farewell to a special chapter in the book of naval aviation, and the magnificent story of tactical airpower at sea. r USS CORAL SEA steamed proudly from 1947 to 1989 in peacetime and in combat. She earned a reputation for operational excellence around the world by completing 12 Mediterranean Sea and 15 Western Pacific deployments and one around-the-world cruise. She provided a meaningful presence in supporting the United States' forward deployed presence and has always been Ready on Arrival to Fight and Win! USS CORAL SEA earned a great combat record in Vietnam and for retaliation strikes against Libya. During her recent and final deployment, CORAL SEA provided a stabilizing presence in the Eastern Mediterranean. The ship and airwing were ready with contingency strike power in the wake of terrorist threats, and supported the evacuation of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut. In her service life CORAL SEA has met or exceeded every challenge. Her great success is a tribute to the more than 70,000 dedicated officers and sailors who have served so proudly and professionally. I call them the quiet heroesf' The decommissioning of CORAL SEA is a significant event in naval history. It is also a special day in the lives of thousands of men who served CORAL SEA, and their families. As CORAL SEA'S last commanding officer, I perform this duty with reluctance and regret, but it is my honor and privilege to decommission this great ship. I hope that you enjoy this book and that it sustains your sense of pride. God bless and keep you. Sincerely, Xilffrf L.E. ALLEN, JR. Captain, U.S. Navy Commanding Officer
