Departing homeports 30th1and 31st, more than 14,000 sailors and Marines ships, 12g of the USS Coral Sea 9 Carrier Battle Group, ,Admiral ,Richard C. Macke, Commander, Carrier in Coral Sea, commanded by Captain L.E. Allen, Jr., with the wing, Carrier Air Wing THIRTEEN, commanded by Captain Warren Christie, Jr., CMED 3-891 and four ships ofthe Mediterranean Amphibious Ready Group CMARG 2-899 departed for a scheduled deployment to the Mediterranean Sea with the 'U.S. Sixth Fleet. 0 During her deployment, Coral Sea steamed nearly 10,000 miles to add to her lifetime total of more than 2 million miles, and participated in several exercises including NATO, exercises with Turkish forces. y International attention focused upon the Coral Sea Battle Group when its port visit to Alexandria, Egypt was cut short to conduct operations in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, along with other units of the U.S. -Sixth Fleet, in support of the Beirut hostage situation. Additionally, aircraft of Carrier Air Wing THIRTEEN flew air support missions during the U.S. embassy evacuation from Beirut. The Coral Sea Battle Group ships and crewmembers visited several it Mediterranean countries including Spain, France, Egypt and Israel, and performed numerous civic and community projects. Admiral Macke and Captain Allen participated in at wreath laying ceremony in Alexandria, Egypt at the tomb of the unknown soldier. Coral Sea hosted Sunset Parade receptions for NATO and community leaders of host countries visited, featuring precision marching performances by the embarked Marine detachment. y F On September 6th, Coral Sea conducted turnover with USS America, at which time Rear Admiral Macke hauled down his ,flag and relocated ,. his staff to the America. Rear Admiral ThomasD. Paulsen,Commander Cruiser Destroyer Group TWO, moved his staff aboard Coral Sea: from the America. Coral Sea returned to her homeport of Norfolk, VA, following her final foreign' port-of-call to Halifax, NovaScotia. g by 8 ' 'T 1 9' ' U Coral ,Sea s 1989 Medite ranean C1'u1 marked her last deployment and brought to an end a distinguished
