i,Q? '-7 Engineering CDR John J. Kennedy, Jr. round the clock, in port and at sea, the engineers are on Watch ensuring Coral Sea is alive. Engineering is the largest department aboard Coral Sea. Engineers are responsible for the ship's propulsion and electrical systems, and auxiliary services including air conditioning and refrigeration. Engineering maintains ship's systems including aircraft catapults, elevators, ship's power and lighting, and maintains the plumbing and fresh Water supply. The ship's propulsion system includes 12 boilers and four engines which provide 212,000 shaft horsepower driving Coral Sea to speeds greater than 30 knots.
