Haifa can be traced to the 14th century B.C. from which period a small port in the vicinity flourished until Helenistic times. But it was not until the Jewish homecoming in the late 19th century that Haifa reallybegan to expand. Today, Haifa is a city of gardens, marketplaces and commercial shopping centers.
