Four carrier air groups ha ve carried the number I3. The first was in existance from November I943 to October l954, the second came into in i946 through the redesignation of a World War ll group until l949. The third was reborn in l96l as a product of the Berlin Crisis of l96l-l962 and was decommissioned in October l962. The Guardians, the fourth, was reestablished in March 1984 and embarked on CORAL SEA in February l985 to form the most advance air-sea platform in existence.
