This Marine squadron is engaged in the interesting and necessary task of active and passive electronic and communication counter- measures along with airborne electronic reconnais- sance. VMC-2 was commissioned on 15 September, 1952 at Cherry Point, North Carolina. The mission of this squadron was airborne strike direction and various forms of radar jamming. December of 1955, saw a change in the mission and composition of the squadron. It was then designated VCMJ-2 and was unified with Marine Photographic Squadron 2 and became the 'fEyes and Ears of the 2nd Marine Air Wing, providing electronic countermeasures in addition to photographic and electronic reconnais- sance. Late in 1957, the squadron transitioned from prop-driven to jet aircraft. Components of VCMJ-2 were among the photo reconnaissance planes that photographed the Russian missile sites in Cuba during the crisis of 1962. The squadron also supported the Marine landings in the Dominican Republic in April of 1965. ln 1972, VCMJ-2 received a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its support of the B-52 raids over North Vietnam. In 1975, all VCMJ squadrons were consolidated into one squadron home-based at MCAS, Cherry Point. This concept allows for VMAQ-2 to deploy three, four-plane detachments at any given time. ln the past four years, the squadron has compiled 17,000 hours of accident-free flying.
