LCDR H. F. Wood OIC VFP-63 is the only light photographic squadron in the Navy, providing photo detachments to air wings in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets. Flying the RF-86, a modified version of the F-8 Crusader, they provided aerial photographic reconnaissance. The inception of the squadron took place in the South Pacific during World War Il. In 1942, the first reconnaissance missions were flown over Guadacanal using Army B-17 bombers. The planes were equipped with Naval photographic equipment and operated by Marine Corps photographers. ln 1949, Light Photographic Squadron 63 was commissioned as Composite Squadron 61 at NAS Miramar and Composite Squadron 62 at NAS Norfolk. These were the first organized units using carrier-type aircraft for photographic missions. VFP-63 remained active during both the Korean War and throughout the Vietnam conflict. Due to the nature of their mission, the combat casualty rates of VFP-63 detachments exceeded the overall Navy carrier rate by three times. Their only defense against the enemy was the speed and maneuverability of the Crusader. Acting as the eyes of the fleet is the role of VFP-63. Today they fill half of all aerial reconnaissance requirements for the entire Navy. They are sometimes even called upon to provide photographic support to other Federal Agencies such as the Air Force, Army Engineers, NASA, the Treasury Department and fhe Coast Guard. .ae N VFP 63
