VF 191 CDR D. A. Moore C0 aeunash, CF ,, . Chaplin, P 1 P' 1 ,,2 a,. HF -I f Deloof, RM A O Q f ' I J ra, . fi fn- George, FL ' l ' I ,r , is M4 . 'Q' we X , we V' I if , SX 1 'rlfflf The squadron was originally commissioned as VF-19 on 1 August, 1943, at NAS, Los Alamitos, California and officially designated Satan's Kittens . The original insignia, still in use, was designed by the late Walt Disney. VF-191 saw its first combat during World War II flying the prop-driven F6F HelIcat . Embarked aboard the USS LEXINGTON, the squadron participated in operational support of the landing on Guam, strikes on Bonin Island, landings on both Palau and Morotai in the Philippines, Okinawa, Formosa, Northern Luzon and in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. The Korean conflict found Satan's Kittens once again embroiled in combat, flying air support and reconnais- sance missions, while deployed aboard the USS PRINCETON, their exploits earning them the Navy Unit Citation. After Korea, VF-191, then based at NAS Moffett Field, continued to serve actively, both in the Mediterranean and in the Pacific. Keeping pace with new technology, the squadron made numerous transitions to faster and better aircraft. Between January of 1964, and July of 1968, Satan's Kittens made four more Far East deployments, two on the BON HOMME RICHARD, and two on the TICONDEROGA. The second cruise on the TICO was highlighted by the downing of the squadron's first Mig Fighter. Summer of 1969 found VF-191 aboard the USS ORISKANK This was to be the beginning of a long friendship between the Kittens and the Mighty O . During the five cruises aboard the O Boat , the squadrons earned the Golden Tailhook Award for excellence in carrier landings, and the Golden Anchor Award for morale. ln December 1975, Satan's Kittens bid a fond farewell to the familiar F-8 Crusader and began the transition to the F-4J Phantom. Once qualified, VF-191 began making preparations for yet another Westpac deployment, this time aboard the USS CORAL SEA.
