VAW-1 14 CDR T. R. Amantea CO VAW-114 is a relatively young squadron, due to the fact, that early warning and electronic warfare is a fairly new concept. They began as VAW-11 Detachment Charlie, deployed aboard the USS KITTY HA WK. Originally flying the E1B Tracers , they transitioned to the E2A Hawkeye , and were the first unit to deploy with that aircraft, proving its usefullness in combat support. Because of the growing responsibility and complexity of airborne early warning squadrons, on April 20, 1967, the CNO directed that all detachments be commissioned as individual squadrons. VAW-114 was already at sea, operating in a combat zone, aboard the USS KITT YHA WK. Her next cruise again with the KITTY HAWK saw the Squadron log 1829 hours and complete 546 carrier landings, earning the COMNAVAERPAC Battle Efficiency CDR A. W. Groman Jr CO my October 1968 brought still another deployment aboard the KITTY HA WK. Offensive operations over North Vietnam had been suspended, but the squadron still amassed 2174 flight hours and over 600 carrier landings. On November 6, 1970, VAW-114 left NAS North Island for its fourth deployment aboard the KITTY HA WIC this time with a new aircraft, the E2B. By now, VAW-114, had received its third Navy Unit Commendation for its enviable operational and maintenance record. Three more cruises aboard KITTYHA WK were in store for VAW-114 through November of 1975, when they returned to NAS Miramar. Following a short standdown period, an intensive training program was begun in preparation for deployment with CVW-15 and the USS CORAL SEA. I Wg Allen, ME ,f . A ' , Andersen.
