VA-95 Attack Squadron NINETY-FIVE began its colorful history an 15 October 1943 when it was commissioned Torpedo Squadron Twenty fVT-20l, at San Diego, california. Ten months ater, VT-20 had completed its training cycle and deployed aboard USS ENTERPRISE with 16 TBM Avengers . During this time, Torpedo Squadron Twenty took part in numerous battles, including the battle ot Okinawa, Formosa, Leyte and the second Battle of the Philippine Sea. By the close of World War ll, VT-20 was credited with sinking or seriously damaging over 366,000 tons of enemy shipping. On the 15th of October, 1945, VT-20 entered the annals gf history, as the squadron was redesignated Attack Squadron Ten Able. Then, on August 12, 1948, Attack Squadron Ten Able became Attack Squadron Ninety-Five. The squadron was decommissioned in November 1949 to be reactivated in April of 1952. After the Korean Conflict, VA-95 continued its combat readiness training with ,A 7, g gf.: R.- Q. 7 -11737 , sf 7. Xs.g3X?'f 7 X 315-f..L.-v V' ' 7 X' K. .. ,..- sims ,' ll' A 7 f - :gs -. 5 seg af. Ex? -- .7 ,ww seg- .v.5.sf- 5. .v ,Y numerous cruises. In March 1970, the Lizards were informed that the squadron would again be decommis- sioned. Two years later, on 31 March 1972, Attack Squadron Ninety-Five was again back in the air flying the Grumman A-6 lntruder . The squadron finished its work-ups in nine months and departed in March 1973, on the first peacetime cruise to Westpac since 1965. Upon return to the states in November, another training cycle began, highlighted by the winning of Whidbey's monthly bombing competition award 10 times. The Lizards also received the COMNAVAIRPAC and CNO Safety Awards. On their most recent cruise, VA-95 was tasked to provide escorts for the helicopters evacuating Saigon. Then, in May 6 1975, with the capture of the merchant ship Mayaguez, VA-95's lntruders were the only A6's to actively participate in operations that ultimately resulted in the recovery of the ship and its crew. ., WU!
