VA-22 The Fighting Redcocks were originally commissioned on July 27, 1948 at NAS Norfolk, Virginia. The squadron was initially designated as VF-63 with the change to VA-22 coming in July of 1959. The Redcocks have flown a variety of aircraft over the years culminating with the present A-7E Corsair ll . The 26 year history of VA-22 has included numerous calls to combat during both the Korean and Southeast Asian conflicts. They participated in the 1955 evacuation of Tachen Island and confronted Communist Chinese activity in 1958 near Quemoy Island. They were in readiness during the Pueblo crisis of 1968 and provided support for the Saigon evacuation of 1975. The most recent call to arms was the Mayaguez incident of 1975. The Redcocks have completed six combat deployments and have flown over 10,000 combat strike missions. During their last combat cruise in 1972, VA-22 participated in the mining of Haiphong Harbor and with the intense air strikes conducted over North Vietnam. Ironically, the first peacetime cruise for VA-22 included support operations for the mine sweeping force in the Gulf of Tonkin. These were the same mines VA-22 had dropped the year before. The long and proud history of the squadron includes being awarded three Navy Unit Commenda- tions, two Meritorious Unit Commendations, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with device, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. 7 CDR L.
