LCDR David McCampbeIl, who later became the Navy's leading ace in World War Il with over 30 kills, was the first Air Wing Cflmmander. Driginally assigned to the USS ESSEIC the Airwing was responsible for the destruction of over 700 enemy aircraft. At the end of the war, the Airwing was d9C0mmissioned twice, then reformed after the outbreak of hostilities in Korea. On 7 February 1965, Air Wing Fifteen, operating from the deck of the USS CORAL SEA, flew its first strikes against targets in North Vietnam. From June 1969 to June 1970, the Airwing flew 11,843 combat sorties and delivered 14,553 tons of ordnance against enemy lines of Wmmunication. On 9 May 1972, Air Wing Fifteen 1:7 Yi' - , ...ss Q ,,.,,. .94 .t conducted one of the most significant single operations of the Vietnam conflict - the mining of Haiphong harbor. In December 1974, Air Wing Fifteen and USS CORAL SEA deployed on a peacetime cruise to Westpac. The first half of the cruise was dedicated entirely to training and readiness. The second half, however, witnessed the steadily deteriorating situation in South Vietnam. During April and May the Air Wing's preparedness for combat support was put to the test as it was called upon to assist in the evacuation of Americans from Saigon in addition to the successful rescue of SS Nlayaquez and her crew. ln six combat cruises to Southeast Asia Air Wing Fifteen has flown more than 60,000 combat sorties and received four Navy Unit Commendations and two Meritorious Unit Commendations.

' , W ,ti xg , - X , The story of Naval helicopter aviation was born at NAS Lakehurst, New Jersey, in 1948, as Helicopter Utility Squadron One. During the Korean action, HU-1 quickly and conclusively demonstrated the effectiveness of helicopters in combat support and began a record of service to the Fleet which remains unsurpassed. Perhaps, most notable, is the squadron's record of rescues, which today totals in excess of 1500. By the middle of the 1960's, HU-1 was redesignated HC-1. During the war in Vietnam, HC-1 grew in size until at the W6r's height, it was the largest helicopter squadron the Navy has ever known. Due to this extreme size and Pluralify of missions, in 1968, the squadron was reorganized into five separate squadrons. Two of the Squadrons were later decommissioned and reabsorbed back in to HC-1 in June, 1975. Thus, today, HC-1 provides both Search and Rescue QSARQ, logistics services, and also maintains a rapid response combat SAR capability. HC-1 was honored to be selected as the recovery squadron for the last three Apollo missions: APOHUS 15, 16, and 17. HC-1 is currently homeported at NAS, North Island, Ca., having been one of the last Squadrons to participate in the closing of NAS, Imperial Beach, Ca. Over the years, HC-1 has flown a wide variety of aircraft. Today they fly the Sikorsky SH-3G utility hellcfbpter, and the armored HH-3A Combat SAR helicopter. - LCDR M. D.
