Mai Nav gation epartment Contrary to popular belief the CORAL SEA does not arbitrarily plough the waves of the western pacific. We have a set course from point A to point B and at any given time our position can be determined by the Quartermaster of the watch in the chart house. It is the responsibility of the navigation department to get the CORAL SEA to where the men can hit the beach while insuring that the ship doesn't! They are continually updating the charts, our road maps of the sea, so that we are aware of any new obstacles in the constantly changing ocean. ' Gyros, Loran, Sins, Radar and most notably, the SRN-9, have replaced the sextant as the primary tool of the modern mariner. Using this variety of electronic equipment including the use of satellites, CORAL SEA'S QM's can often pinpoint our position to within a radius of 500 feet. The navigation department also provides necessary information concerning the tides as well as the time the sun or moon will rise and set. However, the most important thing is that they know how to get us back from Subic Bay to the Golden Gate.
