-1 eck Department ln the beginning there were wooden ships and iron men. The ships have since evolved into massive complicated steel structures but many of the basics of seamanship are still with us. The blending of past skills and modern technology are manifested in our Deck department. The responsibility of deck department that most people are aware ol is the mooring and anchoring of the ship. However, once the ship's brows are down and secure most people forget about the boatswain's mates until it is time to get underway. But their task does not begin and end with liberty call and the setting of sea and anchor detail. Deck department is responsible for the general cleanliness of a large portion ol the 02 level, as well as the sponsons and fantail. They also maintain the ship's motor whale boats, the captain's gig, and can man liberty boats if the need arises. Deck department is also charged with manning the unrep and refueling stations during replenishment evolutions at sea. There are tour divisions within the department.
