The blending of past skills and modern technology are manifested in our Deck department. The responsibility of deck department that most people are aware ol is the mooring and anchoring of the ship. However, once the ship's brows are down and secure most people forget about the boatswain's mates until it is time to get underway. But their task does not begin and end with liberty call and the setting of sea and anchor detail. Deck department is responsible for the general cleanliness of a large portion ol the 02 level, as well as the sponsons and fantail. They also maintain the ship's motor whale boats, the captain's gig, and can man liberty boats if the need arises. CS Division When the electronic lines of communication are shut down, the importance of the signalman increases, for it is essential that the convoy be aware of any course changes or operational modifications. Normally their duties consist of rendering honors to passing ships and boats along with ensuring the ship's proper display of Ensigns and personal flags. CORAL SEA'S signal gang can be justly proud having attained the highest grade ever given to a carrier during refresher training. - f, m f , ' Li . i -V M' ,T if l M . 1 ,W Nga- gm , Q E y . . fa-w N 3 v X v N. - L is N My so . i ' ' ' A ' ' ',.'
