Coral Sea's second-in-command is Captain E.V. Laney, Jr., a veteran air officer. He was born in San Diego, Cal., in 1928 and entered the Navy in 1949. After college and flight training he was commissioned in 1949, and reported to Fighter Squadron 53, serving aboard USS Valley Forge CCVA-455 and USS Essex CCVA-93 during the Korean War. Later tours of duty were made as an aviator instructor at Naval Air Station Kingsville, and with Squadrons VF-144 and VAH-123. Captain Laney became executive officer of VQ-2 in 1967. ln 1968 he reported aboard Coral Sea as operations officer and became executive officer in December of that year. He has Bachelor of Science degrees from the University of California, Berkeley, and from the U.S. Naval Post Graduate School, Monterey, in Engineering Electronics. Captain Laney is married to the former Margaret Ann Lacer. They live in Alameda, Cal., with their three children, Michael, Karen Sue and Diane Marie.

Occasionally during the cruise CORAL SEA was designated flagship. Rear Admiral James C. Donaldson, COMCARDIV Three, came aboard Sept. 19, and for two months flew his flag in CORAL SEA.
