Here are pipefitters, coxswains, accountants and Marines, boilertenders, electricians, engineers and yoemeng mechanics, quartermasters, pilots and ordnancemen, stewards and clergy- men. The Mexican, Greek and Australian. Men of all races, creeds and nationalities, skills and avo- cationsg the potential artist and career naval officer. Here are the familiar faces of men who are required by the necessities of a democracy to live and work together in a cacaphonous atmosphere of dedication and indifferance, boredoin, hard work and amusement, and lonliness, in the midst of human congestion and companionship. Working together on this city built to protect a nation are the hands and minds of teenagers and grandfathers. Here are hands maintaining and repairing. Hands always groping, touching, manipulating throttles and swabs, valves, computers and cont- rol sticks, rockets and bombs. Hands holding a prayer book.. And minds always thinking. . .probing. Minds planning and pondering over complex battle problems, seeking better ways of improving the vital skill of waging war. Minds sharing disap- pointments and laughter, dreams and goals, failures and achieve- ments. Here are minds experiencing-some for the first time-the anxieties and hopes which arise during the search for a lost shipmate. In this mixture of sights and sounds, emotions and purpose are the men of a warship which carried them over thousands of miles of ocean to peoples and continents flung far and wide .. . the same warship which provided each man with the wonderous opportunity to experience an infinite variety and richness of impressions and to fill the mind's storehouse with memories which last a lifetime. Hawaii, Australia, the Philippine Islands, Guam, Japan and Okinawa. The customs and accents all varied, but rare was the man who found himself a stranger in any of these lands. For there is no strangeness in the familiar eyes of countless Japa- nese and Australian orphans who visited the ship. Eyes univer- sal in their expressions of wonder and awe. Nor were there feelings of strangeness among the American sailors and Aus- tralian girls who found themselves in love...or in the minds of men who returned to lands and, oceans which echoed personal memories of a war and the familiar names of its battlegrounds. Leyte Gulf, Midway and Mindanao, Coral Sea and the South' ern Cross. Here is the story-told pictorially-of eight months in the life of a warship during peacetime. Still preparing to defend the United States of America. A refrain in the lives of Navy Men... Q 4 lf. H' 1 a . 4 I 1 A U ,ai N L! Q3 It had to happen sooner or later and now it was time. Sailors and their well-wishers made the customary parting gestur- esg there were embraces and handshakes, pleadings to write often and warnings to take it easy and stay out of trouble. The sailors' first liberty port in the Western Pacific, Hawaii, revealed a land of tall palm trees, long beaches and huge, White-capped waves that are constantly carressed by the warm- tropical breezes which blow across the islands. f V , t I Oahug the city of Honolulu, Diamond I-lead and Waikiki Beach, Kalakaua Avenue with its bright display of neon lights, pink and white hotels, stores, and niteclubsg and the green, fertile countryside, all managed to convey spirit and provide entertainment, in spite of the periodic tropical rains. And the daily routine is momentarily forgotten as a traditional naval spectacle briefly tightens the ex- isting relationship among men of the sea. On its way to Australia and to another, more ser- ious, celebration, Coral Sea crosses the equator and enters into the mariner's legendary domain of King Neptune-where the ship stages her own festivities. Emerging from the gloomy lower deck confinement of the carrier, the participants of the celebration find themselves saturated by Southern Hemisphere sun and a salt water shower- introductions to the crossing of the line ceremonies. Filled with curiosity and ragged in appearence, the men subject themselves to the discretion of other sail- ors who had already crossed the equator and who rule the day-the shellbacks. Combating filth, slime, grease, overcoming nauseating obstacles, sitting' through unwanted haircutsg and attempting to out maneuver skillfully applied shillelaghs, the fatigued and somewhat degraded pollywogs stagger to the end. Now Golden Shellbacksl' the weary figures descend from the flight deck. Smiles appear on the faces of most men, accompanied by encouraging shouts and sore bottoms. 1 1- Y1 N www W 1 A ! 1 E , , 1 1 4 ' 1 .ff --',.', , 2 . - , . . -, ' ' f3 4'f I 1 56 1 ! x F 5 t , L I B 1 1 f bu x , 'Qf' I N , W 1 1 1 1 59 ww- ix ,-ggtn , ly, -n.'95:Q1 3 ,, ,A , -' .Q , 3,1 4, 4. On the Sydney Heads, towering cliffs that guard the entrance to the city's harbor, an Australian artil- lary battery responded with a similiar firing. The 21-gun salutes announced the arrival of the USS Coral Sea in Sydney, Australia. Six years had passed since the last American warship C0f1'1P3I'al9lC in Size with the Coral Sea had been moored in Sydney Harbor. A period of time in which the Aus- tralian Government had sent annual requests to the United States, inviting naval vessels to commemorate with them a battle fought 2I years ago on the Coral Sea. It was there that combined Allied Navies halted the Japanese drive towards the Australian continent. And now an Australian-American celebration in Sydney commemorating that battle. Two weeks that- saw 86,ooo people explore the decks of the Coral Sea and saw a con- tinuous flow of letters, phone calls and personal requests inviting crew members to attend dinners, parties, trips through the countryside, sporting events and official engage- ments. A city gave itself to a ship and her crew and made the Visitors proud to be Americans. Like most major cities of the Far East, Manila seems like a paradox. Alongside some of the world's most modern buildings are streets filled with every possible means of conveyance -ox-drawn carts, horses, vintage buses, and jitneys, splashed with every color in the rainbow.. The edge of the city does not lead into the Westerner's idea of a countryside hut, instead, marks the beginning of jungles and marsh lands Where the bull is still unrivaled as the chief means of transportation. ' ' ' Manila was the hardest hit capital city of the last World War and since then has become an almost living memoriam of war ruins, massive cemetaries, and monuments-all of which seem to camouflage the city's reconstruction. , 1 ' X, -1, , 'gif ,H-. fs ,, f .1,i,. D., AO3, Carreon, - ., AN CARRIER AIR GROUP FIF TEEN Carrier Air Group FIFTEEN was commissioned on 1 September, 1943, at Norfolk, Virginia. LCDR David McCambell, who later became the Navyis leading Ace in WWII with over 30 kills, was the first Air Group Com- mander. Ace McCambell took the Air Group aboard the USS ESSEX in May of 1944 and operated in the Pacific theatre until 17 November, 1944, when the Air Group returned to the States for a well deserved rest-after destroy- ing over 700 enemy aircraft. For outstanding, participation in strikes against Wake and Marcus Islands, the Philippines, Palau, Ryukus, Formosa, the Bonins, and the famed Marianas Turkey Shoot, Carrier Air Group FIFTEEN was awarded the coveted Presidential Unit Citation. From this time on, the Air Group was to be known as Fabulous FIFTEENH, a title well earned. The Air Group was decommissioned for a short time following WWII only to be reformed and decommissioned a second time in 1949. After the outbreak of the Korean War, Air Group FIFTEEN was formed for the third time and during the Korean Conflict and flew over 12,000 combat sorties during its two combat tours. The Korean Presi- dential Unit Citation was awarded the Air Group for operations while aboard the USS ANTIETAM during its first Korean tour. The Air Group commenced its second combat tour in Ianuary 1953 aboard the USS PRINCETON and at one time operated for 55 consecutive days on the line. This is the longest sustained combat operation con- ducted continuously at sea by any air group during the Korean War. 'cFabulous FIFTEENU established another fleet record on 15 Iune, 1953, when 184 sorties were mounted in support of the Battle for Anchor Hill on the eastern edge of the front line. It was also during this period that LT Guy Bordelon of the Air Groupis VC-3 detachment shot down five Chinese night intruder aircraft while temporarily assigned to the Air Defense Command in Seoul and became the only non-jet Navy Ace of the Korean War. Since the end of the Korean Conflict Air Group FIF TEEN has made seven deployments to the Far East with the SEVENTH Fleet, the last three being made aboard the USS CORAL SEA. , A gn-eff-fit G is 2 Commander W.
