L 1 1 '- UM, ., .. .',,,,., ,r- i--- - ii I A thirty-two year old jet pilot from Spokane Washington an eighteen year old seaman from Rome Georgia a twenty-four year old second class electronics technician from Philadelphia Pennsylvannia. The thoughts the hopes the impressions of these men are CORAL SEA. A gray carrier steams out of San Francisco Bay An observer on Golden Gate Bridge sees only a large steel ship He does not realize that within that ship are three thousand six hundred extremely complex in- dividuals a melting pot of America Yet for seven months these individuals combine to form an effective fighting ship a deterrent to aggression For each man a cruise in the Far East has a different meaning. It is the Hrst time away from home for the Seaman the fifth cruise for the jet pilot and a chance to learn' japanese for the young electronics technician The ports of call are the same the sights they will view almost the same yet each of these men will return having gained something different This book will tell pictorially the factual story of CORAL SEA s cruise It will show the sights the actions the common experiences which we all have shared. lt is unfortunate that we cannot show how these stimuli affected the film of each mans mind. What the cruise has meant for each of us or how it has affected us can not be portrayed here because these experiences Hltered and absorbed have become part of each individual Twenty years hence this book may lie forgotten on a dusty shelf but the cruise s influence will live on A Rome Georgia farmer may urge his son to Join the Navy a high ranking naval officer may possess an unusually comprehensive knowledge of carrier operations a Chief Electronics Technician on recruiter duty in Des Moines Iowa may decide to teach a night school class in Japanese The eEects of CORAL SEA s cruise will not end when the ship docks in Alameda They will endure and scatter as a bag of feathers on a windy 2. until I+ Cir 4 7 9 , 1 7 7 7 . . 9 ' 7 , . 7 9 7 . , , . 9 ' 7 7 7 7 7 1 1 7 . . . , . . . , .
