In one of the most turbulent eras in our country's history, and unbelie- vable array of people with get- rich-quick ideas swarmed to the West. With gold as the catalyst, a Wave of crime and violence engul- fed San Francisco during the mid- nineteenth century and embodied itself as the infamous 'C Barbary Coast section. Not until 1917 was the city's C' Barbary Coastn area finally closed and what little law and order existed up to that time can be attributed principally to an impromptu group known as the Vigilantes. With this rather extraordinary history, including the spectacular earthquake and fire of 1906, it is not surprising that San Francisco has developed a singular personality.
