Lofty clouds, hanging over Coral Gables, Florida, parted in September. 1926, to reveal the first high school, Ponce De Leon, in the city beautiful. The stu- dents in the building of traditional Span- ish architecture, chose the flashy red and black as their colors, and gave their school the name, Cavaliers.', But this was not the beginning. ln 1932, Mr. H. N. Rath became the principal of Ponce, and he immediately began to mold the school for potential greatness. New organizations were added. Cavaliettes . . . Band . . . Ponce Tribune . . . Service Clubs . . . and many others. The letters C-A-V-A were taken from the school's nickname, and L-E-O-N was taken from the proper name. Thus, Cavaleon was born. Soon, the enrollment zoomed sky high. The old buildings were no longer adequate to hold the growing student body. So, in 1950, Ponce became Coral Cables Senior High School at Bird and Lejuenne Roads. The bright red and black gave way to a more reserved crimson and gray, which fit better with our new title, L'The School of Distinctionf' This was the warm-up. Sheltered hy the balmy blue Florida skies, Cables spread itself over 26 acres. The towering palms and lofty banyan trees made the school look like a country club. But, that was not so. We had some of the best teachers in the state, and they made us work hard for our distinction title. This year is the fulfillment of a dream for Mr. Rath, and many others who have watched our great school grow. We have conquered Miami High, on our way to the undisputed Big Ten Championship football trophy. The brains of our school won 21 places in the Merit Scholarship Exam finals, the most from any school in Florida. Our own Cavaleon 1956, predeces- sor to the book that you are now reading, received Medalist award in national com- petition at Columbia. We have come of age. And yet with all of these achieve- ments under our wings, we are already looking for new horizons to discover and conquer. THIS IS THE BEGINNING . . . The sky's the limit! PRE EN TING THl !
