Dedication: 1973 was an important year because the United States longest war ended. Beginning in 1961, our government began sending military advisers to a remote comer in South East Asia. After that initial strategy, a new word was introduced to the public by our newspapers and newscastors: escalation. By 1969, over one-half million G.I. 's were engaged in a desperate struggle with the Vietcong militia and the army of North Vietnam. This conflict was unlike any other our young men have been asked to fight in our two hundred year history. Instead of the ancient method of two armies maneuvering in the field for advantage, Vietnam proved to be a guerilla war. When the enemy killed quickly and then relinquished their positions, it was upsetting to Americans who have always learned to take territory and hold it. From these strange encounters, other new terms and phrases originated: Kill-ratio, DMZ, Arvin, and worst of all, the expression- they were wasted. That horrible, lengthly war touched everyone in the United States. Families were tom apart and our nation became divided as men of good will differed on the solution. Whatever the cause, whatever the final result, this book is dedicated to those who will not come back to us. Joe Hill This picture of Joe Hill was taken in 1958 when he was about 11 years old. When Joe went to C.H.S. he lived out Fairview, but he was still able to be one of the football managers. After graduation in 1965, Joe went to work at Douglas Fir for 8 months. He joined the army in January of 1966 and became a private 1st class. He was sent to Vietnam and on August 4, 1966, he was killed. 1 1
