(He missed going to the state wrestling tournament by one point.) John left school his Junior year and joined the Army, where he became a Sgt. Spec. 4. He had just turned 19 when he was killed in Vietnam on April 15. 1971. Rick Loomis Rick Loomis attended Coquille High School, but graduated from Marshfield in 1966. Rick was interested in sports, and his Little League baseball coach, George Johnson, remembers him as a fine athlete. After graduation Rick worked in Coquille at the Shell station. In 1969 he married Gayla Sonneman, joined the Marines, and was sent directly to Vietnam after training. Rick was killed July 6, 1969. 10 Dedication: 1973 was an important year because the United States longest war ended. Beginning in 1961, our government began sending military advisers to a remote comer in South East Asia. After that initial strategy, a new word was introduced to the public by our newspapers and newscastors: escalation. By 1969, over one-half million G.I. 's were engaged in a desperate struggle with the Vietcong militia and the army of North Vietnam. This conflict was unlike any other our young men have been asked to fight in our two hundred year history. Instead of the ancient method of two armies maneuvering in the field for advantage, Vietnam proved to be a guerilla war. When the enemy killed quickly and then relinquished their positions, it was upsetting to Americans who have always learned to take territory and hold it. From these strange encounters, other new terms and phrases originated: Kill-ratio, DMZ, Arvin, and worst of all, the expression- they were wasted. That horrible, lengthly war touched everyone in the United States. Families were tom apart and our nation became divided as men of good will differed on the solution. Whatever the cause, whatever the final result, this book is dedicated to those who will not come back to us. Joe Hill This picture of Joe Hill was taken in 1958 when he was about 11 years old. When Joe went to C.H.S. he lived out Fairview, but he was still able to be one of the football managers. After graduation in 1965, Joe went to work at Douglas Fir for 8 months. He joined the army in January of 1966 and became a private 1st class. He was sent to Vietnam and on August 4, 1966, he was killed. 1 1 M Faculty and Administration Excellent education calls Superintendent Office Staff: Mrs. Buna Dickey, Dr. Dorothy Heagy, and Mrs. Charlotte Albertson. A total of $567. 00 profit was made from all the booths. Just about all the classes and clubs participated in the fun. A few comments from the students: Ohhh... It was fun, but I wasn't there very long! (with laughter) It was neat to see people working together. I took my wife out - It was our anniversary. Mr. Adam's sums it all up by saying with a click of the fingers It WAS fun! I thought it was a good project because it involved so many people. Carnival Court: L, to R. Some fantasy from the Mothers Tea Jim Kistner-Quite the Lil’ Abner An example of some of the crazy outfits worn during twirp week. Twirp week activities Twirp Week is a time of fun and just plain goof’ng off, Monday is hat day. A big variety of hats were all over the school. They ranged from Mickey Mouse beanies to Mexican sombreros as big as people. Tuesday is Wardrobe Day. This is a combination of grubby and funny clothes day. It is also a day that many people wore overalls. Ribbon Day is next. Girls wore ribbons, which boys bought for 5$. The boy with the most ribbons won a sucker. Critter and Clash Day was Thursday. A lot of clashy clothes and classy critters were spotted in the halls. Friday was the Spirit Day of Twirp Week. Everyone with Spirit wore red and white. A lot of DEVIL SPIRIT was generated that day, as it started off with apple-bobbing before school. During the afternoon, there was an exciting pep assembly which included a tricycle race. Jim Minard pedalled to victory as the Senior's Lil' Abner. The Twirp Dance was the fun end of a fun week. 34 The Lil' Abneis: Jim Kistner (Fr.) They chose Mr. Steve Short, the Senior class Modern Problems teacher, to address them. He encouraged the class to continue to be the enjoyable people he found them to be in his class. But he also had a few words for the parents with this following quote from Kahil Gibran's THE PROPHET: Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, And though they are with you yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts, For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. Four of the Student Body officers were girls, and, with the leadership of Tina Russell, they involved the Student Council in many new activities. They organized a Winter Formal that was held in January; unfortunately, it coincided with the biggest flu epidemic to ever hit C .H. S. (185 students were absent on one day.) They, also, made life a little more pleasant around school by having a bike rack put in and painting the litter barrels in the school colors. Plans were also started for having pillows made for our brand new library. However, the most important project for the year was the painting of the gym. They raised the money for the paint by selling concessions during basketball games and by having a raffle at the F.B.L.A. Carnival. They voted on the colors (Chinese Red and Off White) and the school district had the gym painted during Spring V acation. This year's Student Council was ably advised by Mr. Cliff Adams and Mr. Steve Short. Sharon Britton, Vice-Pres.; Tina Russell, Pres.; Becky Taylor, Treas.; and Cindy Marshall, Sec. The slate of officers included Leslie Haga, President; Terri ZwickerVice President; Shari Schneider, Secretary; Lori Bryan and Denise Benham, Publicity. State GAA Convention was the first big event of the year with fourteen girls traveling to Estacada. The highlight of the convention was the closing ceremony in which Sharon Britton, State Vice-President left office while Shari Schneider and Cindy Marshall were initiated into office as Treasurer and Member at Large. Dad's Night gave the girls tough competition in basketball and volleyball - perhaps a little too tough! The night ended by a fantastic pot luck dinner which was sponsored by GAA and Girls League members. Activity Nights throughout the year included evenings of basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, hockey, and badminton. GAA is the best working club in the school in which eighty girls actively participate. All girls sports, which are an up and coming thing are sponsored by GAA. It's the Quality of girls that join and participate that make the club. There must be something in GAA that makes eighty girls join. The recreation is here and they enjoy it. All the journalism students who survived the first few weeks have really shown talent as writers. Each year we enter our paper in a nation wide competition and I think we'll score very well this year. The results of the competition will not be known until NEXT September - so get your ish then! The journalism class is divided into semesters as all classes are. The first semester the students sell ads to cover the cost of publication. This year a NEW record of $11,000.00 was raised. Prizes are awarded for the top ad. seller. The prizes range from $12 (winner) to $5. 00 (consolation). The students themselves design the Ads columns. As the editor changes every 3 weeks everyone gets to do everything! The 3 week cycle had good results, 10 issues were published and a new record was set. This year the Devil's Torch had an EXCESS of money (fantastic!) so they bought a new camera! It's a $300. 00 outfit with telephoto lens, and special sessions were set up so the class could learn how to operate the new machinery. Congratulations on a successful record breaking year! The first semester Devil's torch Staff. 60 Steve, Patti, and Randy get the paper ready for printing. Mr. Short teaches how to “check-mate’ Chess Club Members; Mr. Short, Mark Clayborn, Steve Rollins, Richard Dionne, Chris Knecht, Mike Fulton, Candy Moore, Laura Taylor, Steve Meyers, and John Delay. When asked what he thought of the Chess Club, Mr. Short replied, Our club has enthusiastically engaged in the medieval game that has capitivated the interest of most of the great politicians and military leaders for 500 years. We might have a future president or famous general right here at C. H. S. Think what a good teacher might have done for Hitler or Napoleon! (sounds impressive). The purpose of the Chess Club is to provide an opportunity for students to engage in the cranial combat of Chess and to encounter and defeat the teams of other schools. To date only the first goal has been achieved. The team is 2-2, and placed second in a four-way tournament. Mark Clayborn is the hardest Chessmen to beat because he uses the Sicilan defense. The top three players are: Mark Clayborn, John Delay, and Richard Dionne. The officers are Pres. Steve Rollins, V. Pres. John Delay, Sec. Candy Moore, and Treas. Laura Taylor. What do we do now? CHS is host to Rosanna Bert in Glenn Wilson shows Rosanna a big night on the town at the Senior Dance, Rosanna Bertin, 18, Coquille's foreign exchange student this year, is from Padova, Italy, which has a population of about one million. Her father is a bricklayer and her mother is a housewife. She has one brother, Alfredo, and one sister, Flavea. While Rosanna has been here, she has stayed with the Wayne Russell family on their dairy ranch on North Bank Road. Her new sister has been Tina Russell, and her brothers are Tony, Terry, and Troy. Rosanna has given many speeches to local clubs and groups while she has been here. She has, also, adopted many American ways. She likes apple pie, watches a lot of T.V., and wears blue jeans to town instead of dressing up. She explains the last by saying that American males are shy and do not show as much interest in the women they see on the street as Italian men do. In school Rosanna has been a fine student and a very easy person to talk with. Her friendly smile will be missed in Coquille. As the 1972 football season rolled around everyone involved with it looked at it with speculation. We had lost quite a few Seniors at graduation and were having to rebuild. With only five returning starters there were quite a few openings for new people. Coquille's first game was with Willamina. After quite a few fumbles we came out victorious by the score of 14-6. We lost our first home game the next week with S. Umpqua. After that Coquille molded into One fine unit. Everything went a long fine until our final two games. We lost to Myrtle Point then tied our Homecoming game with Siuslaw 0-0. After the season Coquille was still rated as the 5 team in the state - quite a tribute to the team! These consolations were made because of storms that hit the West Coast during the heart of football season. Out of the five games that the Junior Varsity did play, they lost two, one against Myrtle Point by six points and one against North Bend by fourteen points. The other three games the Junior Varsity held their opponents scoreless. In these games Coquille beat Bandon 51 -0, Siuslaw 41 -0, and the Marshfield Sophomores 22-0. As Coach Christensen said, When we win, we win big! And by the scores of the games this statement seems to be very true Jeff Benham, one of the players, also stated that the game was short and sweet, but really too short. The overall Junior Varsity season was a big success, with their record ending up with three wins and two loses. 76 has a winning season The Play is stopped for short yardage, because of the J.V.'s great defense. After two hard weeks of daily-doubles the Coquille High 9th graders were ready to start their first season of high school ball. Coach Luoto just hoped that he had taught his devils enough by the time their first game came up. As it turned out we were more than prepared for Myrtle Point. We came out of the battle victorious by the score of 18-6. On our next outing we fought quite a fight but lost to North Bend 6-0. In the next three weeks we beat Gold Beach and Reeds-port and lost to the Marshfield Blue Jackets. The last game of the season was against the Marshfield Sea Dogs. It was the closest game of the season with us coming out with the shortest end of the stick losing 16-14. Coach Luoto said he was quite proud of his devils for their showing. The change of season gave the girls time to use the upper gym and to become more polished as a team. The team looked strong at the beginning of the season with five returning varsity players. After three hard weeks of practice the team traveled to Myrtle Point to win their highest scoreing game, 34 to 14. The Bandon team came to Coquille with a man-to-man defense and was ahead 12-2 at halftime. Coquille switched from zone defense to man-to-man second half and pulled through with 24 to 21 as a final score. Coquille lost their first game at Pacific but with a return bout the following week Coquille rallied and won 28 to 14. The next game proved easy for the lady Devils as they played Brookings, the newest team in the league Bandon, Myrtle Point, and Brookings gave Coquille a bad time as they had changed their strategy but the team kept on winning. On an early Saturday morning, Coquille hosted the league in the Annual Playday. The first two games left Bandon and Coquille playing in the finals and Pacific and Brookings in the consolation game. The team had a bad day and had their second loss of the season. In their last game the team looked good against Powers as they defeated Powers, 23 to 18. Coquille finished the season as the number one team with a 9-2 record. One thing to remember about any winning season is that it takes the whole team. Mrs. DeBoard. A high scoring young team-good hope for next year! Coach Lorel Bresko The J.V. team was a young ball club basically dominated by Freshmen. Being inexperienced they played a slow controlled ball game. In the first game of the season they met their hardest opponents, Myrtle Point, and were defeated. With a fantastic comeback they won the next five games. After a lot of hard work the season ended with seven wins and two losses. The team worked well together and had a good year. When fifty girls showed up at the first track meeting, Coach Lorel Bresko knew it would be a good season. Even though there were thirty girls left at the end of the season she was right. It was a young team, well outnumbered by freshman. The talent was evident but the inexperience prevented the team from showing their full potential. The three seniors, Sharon Britton, Tina Russell, and Leslie Haga added much to the team. The highpoint of the season was district. All the hard work and practice finally seemed worth it. Coquille placed fourth out of nine teams. Though only one person (Sharon Britton took second in the javelin) made it to State, Coquille had many people place. The team worked hard, which is evidence of their success, but the beach run picnic and the bus rides made it a lot more fun. Everything considered it was a very good year for the Coquille High Girl's Track Team. 84 As Debbie leaves the other girls in her dust. Sharon Britton goes to State Sharon showing her strength. They were led in running by Greg Rodenburg who placed 10th place in District, at Pacific. Coach Phillips said that the team did a good job, not many people realize what kind of sport Cross Country is the team runs 2. 6 miles every meet; that does not count the many hours and miles they do during practice. Many of the teammates said that the practice was hard, but placing in a meet was worth all of the running. Greg Rodenburg and Coach Phillips. 86 Country Dinner Time! Only this time we came home empty handed. Our first defeat came by the hands of Madras. With this loss our next game was with Henley the next morning. Apparently we couldn't put it together and it ended there. Madras went on to play Scappoose for the state championship. This seemed to be the year of the close game. We had five games decided by five points or less. In two of our three games with Bandon they came from behind to beat us in the last two minutes. With the new rules on fouls most of the scores of the games were lower. A good example of this is our first game with Myrtle Point. We lost in overtime 39-41. We did win thirteen of our games. Our biggest win was against Brookings. Coach Trathen said it felt very good to have control of a game the way we did. The final score was 86-48. Our 13-9 season was good enough to capture the league trophy and give us a good spot at the tournament. All they needed to do was dedicate themselves to working hard and the season could be a success. In the early going they showed excellent team work by putting together a 15 game winning streak. A mild let down for one weekend cost the Junior Varsity a defeated season but they rebounded quickly and won the remaining four ball games for an outstanding record of 19 wins and 2 losses for the season. The J. V. 's started the season being young and inexperienced. With some help from the coach they learned a lot about running bases, hitting, and what to do with the ball. After a season of playing, quite an improvement could be seen. Their best game was against their toughest apponent, Reedsport, in which they lost in the last inning. The team consisted of many young players, but good quality for future years. This seasons J. V. Baseball players had a good attitude in that they were always willing to strive for improvement. They worked hard in practice and were always willing to be coached. When they wanted to play baseball they won games. If this group continues to play baseball because they like to play baseball, said Coach Cliff Adams, they'll always be proud of their performance. Coq. 2 Scoreboard North Bend J. They had four teen matches with teams like Reedsport, Gold Beach, Marshfield, North Bend, and Bandon. Their record was not to good but they made up for it with a hearty effort. Mr. Short said that every team has a building year and this was ours. The varsity team went to Salishan, a championship course, for district and came in fifth out of nine teams. This rating was not bad at all because the four top teams had played the course many times and one team has Salishan as its home course. So we ended the year in pretty good shape. 104 Tim taps it in. Classes Juniors Junior Class Officers: FRONT ROW, Connie Haag; secretary, Debbie Jones; Student Council Rep. , Pam Miska; Vice President. BACK ROW, Mary Player; Treasurer, Darrell Pierce; President, Lauren Hatcher; Student Council Rep. , and Mr. DeBoard; Class Advisor. The Class of 1974 had a very profitable year as Juniors. A good group effort during football season resulted in the Juniors earning the top prize in the float contest. Football concessions, managed by Dave Scolari and Craig Morgan, boosted the class treasury. Denise Benham represented the Juniors on the Homecoming court. By a majority vote a semi-formal dance took the place of the traditional Junior Prom. The music was provided by The Musti Brothers, a seven piece band from Eugene. There was a big turnout and apparently everyone had fun. FT A sponsored a school carnival, not only for enjoyment but to give clubs and classes a chance to earn money. The Juniors earned money by taking pictures of people behind cartoon bodies. Our carnival princess was Shari Schneider. With some of the money earned this year we helped beautify the sctool by laying cement to enlarge the walkway outside the north entrance. From beginning to end it was a good year to remember. 160 Kip’s and Frank’s concentration is broken by the photographer. 161 )eif Benham David Berge Mr. DeBoardfinishes Kelli Brown Dan Billings Carol Connelly Darrell Fisher Cory Courtright Sue Eilertson Bob Fults Randy Carnahan Darrell Fults John Caughell Curt Ellison 162 Rick George Dewey Gilkey Delsa Gillespie Diana Gilpatrick Wade Gould second year of advising. To begin with, we were very lucky to have as a member of our class Erna Traber, who came from Switzerland and stayed with the Gantenbeins. Erna became very well-liked during her six month stay, and everyone was sad when she returned home. Twirp week saw Terry Russell represent sophomore males by being the candidate for Lil1 Abner. Shortly after Twirp Week sophomores sponsored a dance to raise money. Homecoming week is always hectic — anyone who saw our float probably has some idea of the hassle! Joni Holycross was a lovely sophomore Princess for Homecoming Court. The principal fund raising for the future was magazine sales. As usual, the class jumped in and really worked, so money will be no object for next year's Jr. Prom. Cindy Cartwright served as sophomore Carnival princess. While income from the booth wasn't fantastic, it was a lot of fun participating. Class rings arrived in April, and they were the main objective for this year. To sum up what makes the sophomore Class tick: We've got spirit, we've got drive, we're the class of 75! Who are you whistling at Joni? Freshmen The Freshmen started their new school year out with the voting of Mr. Hello and Miss Hello. They were given a list of Seniors, and voted for one each. During the football season, they put on two cake raffles. These started the mighty Freshmen well on their way to money making. Homecoming was next on the agenda. The Freshman participated in on the fun. They placed 3rd in float and added to the sign making. The Freshmen had a long sign with a list of the football players on a Red Devil Express! When Christmas season came, the Freshmen decorated the halls with holly. The Freshmen put on a dance, starring the Juke Box! This brought in more money for their small account. The Freshman also had a booth at the Carnival. It was the Birthday game which was a big hit. Mr. Johnson gives his final comment for the year, It was a good year and very good class. There was always help there when they needed it. FROM TOP: V. P. Brian Walsh, Sgt. of Arms: Jim Kistner. Pres.: Joe Slack, Treas. s Tom Ray, Sec.
