Mrs. Nothwang came to our school to teach English. Her influence will be remembered because she was instrumental in setting up the Selective English program that replaced Junior and Senior English. She taught Expos., Short Story, and Novel. Three years ago she changed position and became the school librarian, and she did a fine job organizing and keeping records. During the summers she went to school at the University of Oregon (where she was on the women's rifle team.) In 1971 she received her M. A. in Library Science. She and her husband Chuck have left for Lajunta, Colorado, where Mrs. Nothwang will be the head librarian at Otero College. We wish them the best. 10 in memoriam Jack Greenlund Mr. Greenlund's death this last summer was sudden and unexpected. He died while attending summer school at the University of Oregon. He will be missed at Coquille High School. Intelligence alone does not make a good teacher... he has to be respected and respect the students in return. This was a quality that Mr. Greenlund possessed. After graduating from O.S.U. in 1951, he came to Coquille and began working on The Sentinel. He became a bookkeeper for Howard Cooper Corporation where he worked for 15 years. He was married in 1956. The Greenlunds had three children. Mrs. Greenlund is presently working at Coquille High School. After substitute teaching for a few years he went back to college and picked the few credits he needed to teach. In 1968 he began teaching at C.H.S. instructing the Bookkeeping, Journalism, Math, and some shop classes. He was also an advisor of the student radio club. He was a dedicated man who was also fun loving and very much in love with life itself. school board handles many projects Mr. Wayne Russell, Chairman of the School Board, handing out diplomas to the outgoing Seniors of 1971-72. The 1971 - 1972 Homecoming was held October 25 through the 29th. It started out in the usual manner with sign making parties held each day after school for each class. All week students worked on their floats which were judged Friday morning. That afternoon after school the girls gathered at Washington School for a serpentine through town doing their favorite yells. Friday night the Devils met the Bandon Tigers and at halftime the winners of the sign making contest were announced. 1st went to sophomores, 2nd Freshmen, 3rd Seniors and 4th Juniors. The winners of the float contest were announced also. 1st went to Seniors, 2nd Juniors, 3rd Sophomores, and 4th Freshmen. The Queen and her court were crowned and the band performed to finish the halftime entertainment. The band Bo Jangles was a great success at the 1971 Junior Prom. rockin’to bo-jangles A Night to Remember was the theme for this years Junior Prom. The multipurpose room was decorated with yellow, orange, and green streamers. One of the main attractions of the evening was the food, as you can tell by the picture. A local group from Marshfield, Bo Jangles, provided rock music for the prom. Everyone enjoyed the band and seemed to have a good time. George and Denise rock out while Mike scoobie do s. To start things off with a bang the new teachers at Coquille High School were invited to shave balloons. They accepted the invitations and went to work with shaving cream and bits of balloons flying. Other events during the week included a sophomore shoe-shine day and a Freshman garbage pick-up day in which the Freshmen were found crawling around the halls collecting litter that just happened to be dropped by upper class-men. Next on the agenda was slave day. On this day the masculine role was protrayed by the girls. Instead of the boys opening doors and carrying books, the girls did. I love your outfit! , was a familiar expression observed on critter and clash day. And, as the name implies, many different stuffed critters appeared on the scene. The surprise came when a live critter showed up! The dance, following dress-up day, was a big success. The biggest event of the evening was when Pekka defeated his competitors: Junior: Quentin Wolfe; Sophomore: Mitch Morgan; Freshman: Dane Thommen; and was crowned Lil Abner. Pekka gives acceptance speech as Lil Abner. Decorations carried out the theme, balloons, and clown faces surrounded the guests. Spool decorations were a merry-go-round, animal cage and balloon stand. A ferris wheel was the focal point of the stage. Boys were selected to assist the models from the stage and the spools, they were in costume to fit in the spirit of things. Girls League added much to the success of the Mother's tea as they were in charge of the table decorations and that most important thing, refreshments! Pep Club started the year by making new outfits for the football season. The pants and vests outfits made high spirits much easier when the girls went running across the field to make the famous V . The spirit kept movin right up to Homecoming, then onto basketball and wrestling. Fridays again became uniform days with the new red outfit for the winter. The girls kept running as Wrestling meets had to fit in the schedule for them. A busy year ended with a new Rally and officers all set to go again next year. The pancake breakfast was a sucess although not as many people showed up as last year. The club also helped with the March of Dimes road Block, and the door to door Heart Fund Drive. Two charity basketball games were probably the club's most sucessful projects. One game with the Marshfield Key Club held at the Coquille Middle School had the proceeds going to the tuberculosis foundation. The other game with the Key Club-Faculty tilt was held in our own gym. Although the faculty won the game, due to bad officiating, it was a sucess also, with all proceeds going to the heart fund. Our fearless leader Cliff Adams who became a traitor in the Key Club-Faculty game played for the faculty. Since the Key Club Convention was going to be in Vancover B. Aren't they marvelous! G. A. A. What a club! From September to December till the middle of May. Girls Athletics kicked off the year with a State Convention at Watonka High School in the Dalles, Oregon. Ten of our GAA members attended. By the time fall was over we had ninety registered members. The first meeting took us to the beach for a mile run in which we placed first. Our next get together was a big splash at North Bend Swimming Pool. The December meeting brought Moms and Daughters together to a tough battle to the end. February was romantic and sweet as we sponsored a Sweethearts Ball. Tina Russell was GAA Sweetheart with Sharon Britton Leslie Haga as Princesses. March bounced in with two meetings of trampoline. Daddy Date Night made April the best month of the year when the Dads and Daughters got together for a night of volleyball, basketball, and trampoline. The District Convention was held at Coquille and the year finished with pie and ice cream at the Girls Awards Night. Council leads a successful year with Karen Parry as president. FBLA stands for Future Business Leaders of America. It is a club make up of students interested in Business and Secretarial courses, and how they can be put to good use. This is a nationwide organization, and the Coquille Chapter is a new one this year. They started out by setting up a student store which sells school supplies as well as stationery and novelty items. In February, 11 FBLA members competed at District Level at Pacific High School. Coquille came home with 11 ribbons. We were also given an award called the District 1 Skills Competition Award for winning the most ribbons. Although the 9 members who went on to State did not win anything, CHS should be proud of the efforts made by the members of FBLA. Officers: A. Smith, Vice Pres., P. Because Journalism was scheduled for seventh period, only a few students signed up for it. The small staff had a busy time of selling ads and getting their stories in by the deadline. Seven issues of the DEVILS' TORCH were published this year, and the first semester students set a record by selling enough ads to publish the paper for the entire school year. On the staff were Linda Johnson, Ronald Johnson, Marilyn Schuler, Richard Yohn, Bill Kistner, Delva Miller, Cindy Peterson, Patti Schlatter, and Criss Stevers. 64 money making projects help nhs National Honor Society started their year off with a money making baked food sale on October 15. Could No. 1 rated Coquille take state again this year? This seemed to be the big question. But Coach Klemm was determined that this new team was like another; it had to prove itself before and during league play before it could brag. Mr. Klemm explained that last year's title and a lot of sports story writing wasn't going to get the job done. After a hard preseason practice averaging four hours a day, the Red Devils started to roll. They dragged down Femdale, California, who like the Devils had been champions the year before. Coquille went into league play with an impressive 4 G 0. Continuing the season, the J.V.'s ripped off Pacific's Varsity while the Devils Varsity took a well deserved rest. The Devils ran into ruff water as Brookings and Gold Beach were pointing at the team everyone was out to get. Coquille was now 7 G 0. Although Coquille did not get by its last two league games they had an outstanding year. I'm sure every Coquille fan and coach will agree that 27 G 0 is an outstanding record in any league! Mike Peterson and Rick Williams dominated the tackling, both weighing 175 apiece. Kim Luckman and Jay Andrews pulled down the ones that got away. The J. V.'s, like the Varsity, were boosting a perfect record from the year before. This year they came ahead with a 7 G 1 record which still keeps them on top of the team to beat next year. It was a good season and we're all proud of the big job Mr. Ken Trathen and his J.V.'s did this year. The J.V.'s had an outstanding year. Losing only once and then only by one point. This was due to a strong line on both offense and defense. As the cross country meet starts the runners slowly spread out. 82 The cheerleaders and spectators go wild as Tom Cunningham finishes first in the meet. When you go out for such a demanding sport as cross country you attract and get only the best of people. People who are willing to give up five nights a week and Saturdays for training. People who train by running, in all kinds of weather, all kinds of country, with an average of five miles a day. People who don’t mind being tired, who are not afraid to work up a good honest sweat, and don’t care how bad their guts ache. But even with all of this demand, the C.H.S. Cross Country team did an outstanding job. We give thanks, also, to Mr. Townsend. We were going to have a scoreboard but the coach couldn't find the results of the meets. Here, Keith Williams' face shows the effort it takes to run cross country. 83 varsity goes to state The Varsity Team starting from the left are: Assistant Coach Andy Klemm, Gary Moon, John Mahlberg, John VanBurger, Steve Counts, Ron Branham, Dean Parker, Curt Roberts, Rich Rgaone, Gordon Haag, Mike Hoeffel, Kim Luckman, Keith Williams, Head Coach Ken Trathen, and center is manager Doug Gaslin. Coaches talk over their next game plan. 85 This year the Varsity Basketball team took fifth place in the state AA tournament, which was a fine finish for the year. The teams season record was 15-6 and the tournament record was 3-1. To make it to the tournament, we had to play several tough teams, such as Reedsport; with which we split games. We won the game at Reedsport, and they won the second game here. Then we went against Scapoose, who later won the State A A championship. We played two games with Bandon, in which they won both by only four points. Curt Roberts and the other members of the team did a fine job against Bandons six-nine center Bayard Forrest. One of our pre-season games was with South Umpqua; we won the first one 94-67 and they won the second in a nip and tuck thirller, ending by a score of 102-100. One of the many records that the team set this year was in the game with Gold Beach; which we scored 102 points on our own floor. Our last scheduled game of the season was with Myrtle Point. This game decided who would go to the State Tournament. Neither team was ever ahead by any significant margin, but Coquille had a two point lead at the half, which boosted their morale. Coquille, in the second half, worked as a team and there wasn't a doubtful moment the rest of the game as far as Coquille was concerend. It was a great feat that the whole team was looking forward to the opening game at the tournament. But when the game with Reedsport rolled around, we just couldn't put it gotether and lost 75-64. This took us out of the race for the championship, but we could still come back with a fifth place trophy. In the next three games we played, we beat them by 33 points, 20 points, and 24 points, respectively. So, by beating Henley in our last game of the tournament, we became the fifth placed team in the state. This was a good finish for the 71-72 Basketball season. lets go devils! basketball highlights Coquille shows the tournament how a team should look before recieving a trophy. 87 j.v. basketball Junior Varsity Team Starting From the Left are: Mitch Morgan, Gary Fisher, Mark Green, Alan Farmer, Kim Luckman, Dan Moody, Bill Kuyper, Rich Ragone, Ron Carlson, Steve Ferre, Wes Northrup, Mark Freauff, Tom Krieck, Head Coach Andy Klemm and Manager Ed Morris. It seemed that every game the Junior Varsity won the Varsity also won. The JV's were a great inspiration the Varsity especially in the last game with Myrtle Point. In fact the Junior Varsity had quite a tough game with Myrtle Point themselves. The score was very close the whole game and the last three minutes were really neck and neck. The score was tied and two players had a chance to win the game. But it just wasn't to be and the game went into overtime. Both teams made another basket and the game was tied again. In the last fifteen seconds a Coquille player made a free throw which won the game for Coquille JV's and end a good Basketball season. 88 Devils take a short break. The team was young and had several under classmen on the varsity. As the season rolled along the devils improved also. Many of the new members of the team showed good improvement from match to match. All in all it was an enjoybale year for both the wrestlers and -coaches. One of the high points of the year was the trip to Phoenix for the Phoenix Invitational Tournament. The team left Friday night and then wrestled Saturday morning. Although Phoenix proved to be pretty tough taking the tournament Coquille got a strong second. At district Coquille made a good showing taking the district tournament and qualifing nine wrestlers to go to state. At state the competition was tough and the devils only placed three wrestlers: Roger Dunithan, second at 157 pounds, Don Gilkey fifth at 136 pounds, and Keith Lewis got sixth at heavyweight. Some Coquille wrestlers also participated in the Oregon AAV Tournament in Coos Bay but Roger Dunithan was the only to place. He got a fifth place in the greco-roman part of the tournament in the 165 pound division. jv wrestlers lay it Top, Terry Russell, John Harry, Bob Fults, Joel Boey, Bob Anglin, Joe Flories, Kelly Sanford, Dane Thommen, Rick Schmidt, Mark Ayeotte, Cut Ellison, Mark Cangwer, Coach Ken Johnson, Kneeling: Jerry Lyman, Tim Helvie, Paul Miller, Gary Lyman, John Krutchfield, Don Grotting, Steve Silva, Mike Graham, Cordon Hobson. Wrestling has always been one of Coquille's best sports. With a large turnout each year the Junior Varsity coach is always busy. Mr. Johnson who was the lucky person' this year, did a great job showing his little devils the basics of such a demanding sport. This is proven by the great record they drew this year of winning 17 and losing only three. But even with a great coach there are a few things which cannot be taught by an instructor. Things like pride, stamana, good sportsmanship, and learning to lose. You can teach and teach but it does no good unless the individual wants to learn. I might add that the J.V. wrestlers were to learn and out to win. This was proven in practice as well as in competition. Once a week any J.V. wrestler could challenge a Varsity wrestler in his weight class for a spot on the Varsity team. The Varsity members were kept busy fighting off J.V. contenders. All in all the J.V. team has kept up a good reputation of winning of which the Coquille High student body is so proud of. And then came track. Between long hair, some minor drinking and a heck'ava lot of uncooperation, 20 people, mostly freshmen, lasted the season. Mr. Townsend deserves special thanks this year. He took alot of guff, alot of razzing, and harassment. It first started when the length of hair came up. Mr. Townsend was not against reasonable length hair himself, but was just following rules set by the school board. The next problem was booze. It seemed a few of the guys couldn't hold to the regulations set by die school board about not mixing drinks with sports, which are a part of any athlete's rules. When Mr. Townsend finally got enough of the childish acts that seemed to plague many of his participants, such as slogans, nicknames, spitwads, squirtguns, general smart mouthing, failure to show up for practice or meets, he eliminated the problem. He then had alot of freshmen which proved to be a good change. Let's face it, tied for second in league and a faster running game is a good step forward. Since Mr. Townsend retired this year you might have a better insight as to why. Let's hope next year they give the track coach more respect. We started poorly by losing to Reedsport the first matchj but then we won six straight matches including North Bend, Bandon, Gold Beach, and we also beat Reedsport in a home match by only nine strokes. Our medalist for nine of our ten matches was Bill Kistner, sometimes referred to as the Little Giant. The team also went to District which was held at Reedsports and came back with fourth place. For so some reason Coquille was in a slump and really had some problems. Team members are: Bill Kistner with 36.7 stroke per match, Mike Engelgau with a 39.7 average, Randy Pritt 41.6 average, Fred Powers 42 stroke average, and Tim Maeyaert had a 42.7 average.
