1970 “The Spirit of Our Youth” Coquille High School Coquille, Oregon Dedicated to Preston Willis With deep respect and gratitude Coquille High School humbly dedicates this 1970 Laurel to the memory of Preston Willis. Born in Maxville, Oregon, June 17, 1930, he lived in Coquille most of his life and graduated from Coquille High School in 1948. Preston was a charter member of Coquille Jaycees and later served as a State Jaycee Vice President. He was a past President of the Coquille Kiwanis and served for many years as advisor to the Key Club, a post in which he had a profound effect on the lives of many of our young men. Pres.”, as he was so affectionately called by all who knew him, was a strong advocate of our schools and served several years on the Board of Directors for School District 8. In 1966 he was named educational citizen of the year by the Coquille Education Association for his efforts on behalf of schools. Perhaps the following words of Louise Mae Hogan can best describe Preston as we remember him: Tomorrow is not promised us ... So let us take today ... And make the very most of it... The once we pass this way ... Just speak aloud the kindly thought. .. And do the kindly deed .. . And try to see and understand ... Some fellow creature’s need . . .Tomorrow is not promised us... Nor any other day ... So let us make the most of it ... The once we pass this way. We are two eagles Flying together Under the heavens, Over the mountains Stretched on the wind. Sunlight heartens us. Blind snow baffles us, Cloud wheel after us Reveled and thinned. We are like eagles, But when death harries us. Human and humbled When one of us goes, Let the other follow. Let the (light be ended. Let the fire blacken, Let the book close. 9 Teachers Provoke Thought and Learning at Coquille High Mrs. Harriet Gardner Study Hall Mr. Lee Brentlinger English, Journalism Mr. Jack Greenlund Math, Shop, B’S. The Cadet Teaching Program was very successful. This was only its second year as part of CHS curriculum. This year’s enrollment consists of: Lynae Mast, Karen Waterman, Pam Smith, Faye Enlund, Pam Davis, Mrs. Nothwang, advisor, and Lynn Coon. 15 Service with a Smile Mrs. Sonneman The Service People are one of the under-rated people in the school system. Without them, the school system could not function. Without the bus drivers, students would be unable to attend school. Without the janitors, the halls would be classified as a junk yard. And without the cooks, no food would be served for lunches. The service people can be commended for keeping the school system running in a well-organized matter. The students of Coquille High School thank the service people for a job well-done. May we never forget what you do for our high school. 16 Chuck Nothwang Drake Rules Senior Class Treasurer Patti McClellan, President Sherry Drake, Advisor Erma Wisby, Secretary Kris Redmond, and Vice-President Janet Milne take time out to pose for a picture. The Class of ’70 started their last year by electing officers. President Sherry Drake took charge and directed the voting on the style of announcements and the color of the caps and gowns. During the course of the year Kris Redmond reigned over Homecoming. Her court consisted of Shelley Mahlberg, senior; Debbie Miller, junior; and Glenda Paulsen, sophomore. Lynn Coon, John Heenan, and George Allen represented Coquille High School on the All-State football team; Coon as offensive lineman; Heenan as offensive center; and Allen as defensive linebacker. Candy Petre, Dana Benham and George Allen were chosen this year as Outstanding Teenagers of America. The faculty nominate two boys and two girls and then the three that receive the most votes are named. Qualifications include leadership, scholarship, initiative, sports, personality, and school activities. The senior dance, picnic, baccalaureate, and graduation rounded out a great year for the class of ’70. Mr. Brentlinger gives another interesting lecture to his attentive students (Ha Ha) Has Few Extra Chairs Rod looks like he is having a little trouble. The Poetry class surely looks innocent. The variety program of Co-quille High’s English department is one of the best in the state. Having so many classes to choose from, the pupil can choose what kind of English he wishes to take and “eliminate” the kind he doesn’t wish to take. It all adds up to the pupil’s decision which is best for him. Lin gives his full attention to a test. Miss Rigik lectures. What else is new? Social Science Develops “Yep, that dog could tear a person apart at the drop of a hat. Two social science courses are offered; U.S. History and Modern Problems. Mr. Townsend and Mr. Harrison, instructors in these classes, outline the development of capable and aware citizens. A study of international problems is the course of study in Modern Problems. A study of the history of the United States is studied in U.S. History. Dave Rose practices his newly acquired ability to blow bubbles. See Bill. See Bill wink. Bill can wink both eyes at the same time. 64 Capable and Aware Citizens Modern problems prepare students for tomorrow’s world. Coach Klemm Leads Red Devils With Coach Andy Klernn at the helm, the Coquille Red Devils closed out the 1969 football season with a second place in the strong Sunset Six. With a 7-1-1 record at the end of the season, the Devils were able to more than triple their opponents scoring total, scoring 210 points to 54 points, for their antagonists. Moreover, ranked fourth among the A-2 football teams in the state. In addition, 1969 was a year of many honors for the Devils gridmen, notably, John Heenan, George Allen, Lynn Coon, and Steve Wright who made all-state. With great personnel and great coaching, the Devils came out with the best season in a decade. Smothering Douglas 30-0 the Devils scored five touchdowns and rolled up a total of 368 yards. Three different Devils carried the ball across the double line, Jim Owen twice, Doug Reiner twice, and Steve Wright once. The South Umpqua Lancers held the Satans to a 6-6 tie. The Devils, although admittedly not sharp, were plagued with penalties, eight of them for 100 yards, which seemed to come in bunches just as a drive would get started. From pre-game scouting reports, the Reedsport Braves figured to be a tough opponent, but the Devils seemed to overlook this fact and skinned past the Braves, 13-8. Displaying great talent for making the big play when it counted and being tough when chips were down. The Devils downed the Bandon Tigers 27-8. Final statistics had the Tigers ahead in every department but the score. The Red Devils displayed an exciting, hard-hitting style as they completely ruined the Bobcats Homecoming, whipping the biggest team in the conference 18-6. Coquille retrieved the opening kickoff from Pacific, rolled 60 yards up the field for a score and left little doubt in anybodys mind who the victor would be. Quarterback Brian Flug used his running backs, Doug Reiner, Steve Wright, and Jim Owen to the advantage of the Devils with the score ending 38-6. The Red Devils had a chance to get a piece of the sunset grid title but thanks to the Brookings Bruins, the Devils will never see the chance this year. The Bruins took a 12-6 victory to foil the Devils’ grasp for the title. The Devils exploded all over the turf administering a 50-0 shellacking to the Gold Beach Panthers on their homecoming night after their 12-6 loss to Brookings. Steve Wright had a night to remember, rolling up 252 yards rushing. This is a Coquille record for a single night’s performance. The Red Devils ended the most successful CHS football season for the past decade, whipping Suislaw of the Coast League, 20-8. Although hampered by driving rain, a sea of mud, and a plague of penalties, the Devils displayed their ability to take full advantage of any breaks; breaks that came mostly because of hard tackling and alert defensive football. 135 Devils Have 9-10 Record Center: Manager Loren Doty. Then this year, Coach Ian Dorsett organized a golf program. There was a large turnout with the golf team grouped into three teams. The golf team, although no letters were awarded, deserves praise for a job well done in sportsmanship and team play. The season record was five wins-five losses-and one tie. Paul Engelgau demonstrates the good form in swinging the golf club. GEORGIA- PACIFIC C a R P O R AT I a N 152 THE GAIETY 16 E. First St. Carefree casuals for the young adult.
