He can close school in bad weather, and supervises the activities of the bus drivers and the custodians. The School Board acts as his board of advisors and help him if needed. Among their jobs are the hiring of a superintendent, principals, teachers, and deciding on the curriculum and rules. They also balance the school budget. Mr. Lewis Clark, Superintendent. 10 School Board members left to right: Preston Willis, Oran Holbrook, Wayne Van Burger, Tom Drake, Howard Leatherman, Lewis Clark, Fred Marineau, and Herman Floten. Aids Are Great Help English teacher aids, Debbie Sherwood and Linda Allison, put their talents to work on a bulletin board. Joyce Yost prepares to run off somebodies tests! Judy Meachum marks attendance, a daily task in the counseling office. New to C.H.S. curriculum this year is a course in Cadet Teaching. Being it’s first year, there are only four class members, but the enrollment is expected to grow in future years. Students and the advisor involved are: Wesa Gardner, Carolyn Garrison, Sally Waggoner, Mr. Snider, and Jerry Camp. The course gives the future teachers actual experience in the class room for two periods a day. It helps the student get the idea of what teaching a class is really like, and helps him make up his mind whether teaching is really for him. Dorothy Wells separates library book cards. ■■ Service People Aid and Abet This year’s bus drivers: Mr. Johnson, supervisor; Mr. Hogan, maintenance supervisor; Mr. Tow, Mrs. Stratton, Mrs. Phillips, Mrs. Martin, Mr. Provins, Mr. Van Style, and Mr. Creach. Front Row: Steve Ball, Vice-President;and Doug Reiner, President. Notice all officers are boys! The Junior Class started the year by selling concessions at the home football games. This gave their treasury a big boost. Also during Homecoming the juniors took first place in the float contest. In November came the Junior Prom, which was a very successful event and was enjoyed by everyone who attended. After the prom was over the junior’s funds were a bit low, so to help build up their treasury, they sold fire extinguishers. This smiling group of girls are ready and waiting for the half time rush at a football game. They are Nancy Neff, Jacque Griffis, Jan Milne, and Pam Davis. 30 Class of 70 Phil Alborn Diane Allen George Allen Dan Backman Steve Ball Craig Barklow Kathrine Barton Dana Benham Kevin Brown Tom Brown Patty Buel James Buss Diane Butler Sandi Clayton Terry Clinton Jerry Cochran 31 Grumbling Reigns Glen Cox Richard Crawford Roger Crowley Richard Daniels Pam Davis Sherry Drake Terry Drake Glenn Dunithan Judy Edgmon Suzi Edgmon Kaye Enlund Marsha Faught Mark Ferry Brian Flug Patti Frazier Cheryl Gaines Successful Prom Jacque Griffis Kathy Grumbling Kathy Hall Lynda Hansen John Heenan Kenneth Heistand Carolyn Heyman Marilyn Heyman Lonnie Hill Bob Hillyer Ron da Hogg Joan Jacks Bill Johnson Douglas Johnson Kenneth Johnson Bob Kastberg 33 Parks Serves As Janet Milne David Minard Buel Moss Curtis Livingston James Lucas Linda Luff Jeanette Lunstroth Deborah Lytle Cheryl Machacek Cheri Maeyaert Shelly Mahlberg Lynae Mast Gary McAuley Patti McClellan Kathy McCrorey Linda McDonald Bob Miller Linda Miller Vestal Miller ASB Vice-President Jim Owen Becci Parks Carla Paulsen Glen Payton Deborah Perry Candace Petre Bruce Ramberg Connie Randleman Linda Reavis Kris Redmond Doug Reiner Ramona Rice Doug Richardson Doug Riddle Tim Roberts Eldon Rollins Sandi Ruff Linda Schierling Jan Schrader Mark Sell Vione Shaul 35 Extinguishers Boost Rich Shields Corky Smith Pam Smith Bill Steele Linda Sturdivant Richard Swenson Patricia Swinford Ted Thommen Craig Thompson JoAnnc Thompson Tom Timothy Craig Trigg Peggy Tucker Vicki Tucker Sylvia Ulett John Vermillion Class Finances Roxie Walter Karen Waterman Mike Weekly Kathy Wichert John Wilson Shirley Wilson Pamela Woodworth Linda Wooley Norene York Rachel Yost Mark Zink McNabb Heads The class of ’71 officers. The class of ’71 and its advisor, Mr. Andy Klemm, began the year with much enthusiasm. At the first meeting class officers were elected. They were Roy McNabb, President; Ron Kastberg, Vice-President; Duane Dodge, Treasurer; Sidney Sherwood, Secretary; and Katie Lytle, Representative. Vickey Carel was in charge of the Homecoming float. At Christmas, under the direction of Sidney Sherwood, the class planned decorations for the south-end of the hall. Both of these projects won second place. The class also sponsored an after game dance during the football season. To finance their class the sophomores sold magazine subscriptions in Coquille and surrounding areas. Sophomore girls put the finishing touches on their float. Mr. Klemm presents the class rings to the class. All hands are raised for some proposal put before the class. 38 Class of 71 Raymond Alford Ray Allen Arthur Andrews Jim Anglin Virginia Ash Tim Baker Brownie Balison Eric Banks Carl Burkleo Jim Beaver Guy Billings Terry Brandon Sophomores Lead Mike Cannon Vickey Carel Craig Carvall Kathy Causey Jim Cochran Paul Coleman Michael Collinsworth Laverne Counts Cathi Courtright Janet Cox Sally Cox Mike Crowley 40 C.H.S. Doug Johnson takes a time check during Business English. Coquille High’s English department has a much broader variety of courses than most other schools. Having so many classes to choose from, lets the student take the type of English that interests him the most. Mass Media students discuss “Student Weeklys.” 48 English Are Offered Patty shows points of interest in the Globe Theater of the E-lizabethean Era to fellow classmates. 49 Social Science Classes Some studentsask, “Why do we have to study U.S. History and Modern Problems, what good will all this do us in the future?” Although they often seen] to provide useless information, these classes give each participant a better background for the world he or she will be living in tomorrow. U.S. History students take notes on a current lecture. 50 Encourage Discussions An ambitious looking Modern Problems class. Linda Allison, Garry Ekker and fellow classmates take part in a discussion. 51 Mathematicians Coquille’s many math programs offer everyone a wide selection; all the way from Intermediate Math to Advanced Math. Math is a type of discovery-the purpose being not only to learn mathematical equations, but to learn how to use one’s mind to its fullest extent. Mr. Greenlund cha cha chalks for the class. Students attempt to grasp ideas. “How do you read in mathematics?' at Work Algebra 11 students hard at work? 53 Business Courses Many students take an active part in business courses every day. The classes offered are: Bookkeeping. Shorthand 1 and 2, Typing 1 and 2, and Consumer Economics. Susan Van Meter works hard to complete her bookkeeping assignment. Students add columns that likely won’t balance. Lynae Mast and Kaye Enlund take shorthand notes. 54 Are Inviting Miss Swayne gives a helping hand to Tim Roberts and Dennis Mason. Office Practice girls learn filing which they will need in future years as secretaries. 55 Vionc Shaw demonstrates the correct position for typing. Speech Students Show Their Talent Speech students find a hidden voice as they meet the challenges of public speaking. What they are now learning in speech class will be a great asset in the future years. . . . and therefore you must give Snoopy your full support in the coming election!” Candy! How can you do this to poor Pammy? Oh, yes, it was just a skit, but very convincing. 56 Artists at Work Art, new to Coquille High this year, gives the student a chance to express himself by his ability to draw. It has created a great interest, for many students are involved in the course. Janet Hurrel seems pleased with her work. What is it, Janet? Mr. Luoto points out new ideas. Quiet! The whole staff worked diligently to see that deadlines were met and the paper came out on time. News gathered for the Devils’ Torch must first be written out and turned in to Mr. Brentlinger for corrections. Then they are typed, and then re-typed again on special mats before being sent to the printers. The Devils’ Torch is full of school activities, sports, and ideas received from different schools. Garrison Leads Laurel Staff So another year has passed. A year filled with moments of living, a year to remember. The Laurel staff has striven to give you an accurate record of the year’s activities, so that the moments lived are captured forever in pictures and copy. Collected on paper and bound together, the Laurel serves it’s first function as a memory book and a permanent record. A record which will last through the years and keep alive times, personalities, and activities of the school year 1968-69. Although the staff was small this year, we tried to make all this possible. As editor I would like to personally thank my staff and our advisor Mr. Brentlinger for all their help in making the Laurel “69” what it is. We, the staff and 1, wish you all the enjoyment in reading this yearbook that we have experienced in putting it out for you. LAUREL STAFF Editor...................................................
