... all the more remarkable because the devils lost four consecutive, five of six, early in the season . . . credit to the team, especially coach greig, that it could come back . . . losing three extremely valuable starters from last year's third place finisher in the state a-2 tournament . . . coach greig was faced with an awesome rebuilding job in his debut as co-quille varsity coach . . . aiding him were seniors gary johnson, don purvis and bill simpson . . . cocaptains purvis and johnson were named to the league's all-star team, while simpson made the second team . . . gary johnson, top scorer in the league with 441 points, was voted most valuable senior player by his teammates . . . gaining valuable experience for the future were roger sanders, ray fields, mike sisk, larry kribs, and bill white . . . sanders, 1 any kribs, bill simpson, ray fields, calvin pearce, mike sisk, emie anderson . . . seniors don purvis, gary johnson and bill simpson pause with coach grieg . . . 60 win seven in district play bobcat defense unsuccessful as purvis gets shot away . . the red devils opened their league schedule by pulling away from bandon in the second half to overcome the tigers 48-37 . . . knotted 42-42 at the end of the third period, the devils finished strongly to bounce pacific 63-56 . . . gary Johnson's 32 points enabled the red devils to run away from the brookings bruins . . . coquille's inability at the free throw line proved its downfall as arch-foe myrtle point came from behind in the fourth quarter to win 54-50 . . . grabbing a 12-4 first quarter lead, the devils coasted home for a 55-45 conquest of bandon . . . the red devil's hot shooting overpowered gold beach's rugged rebounding as coquille triumphed in the last minute 54-49 . . . after falling behind at the end of the first period, coquille routed pacific 68-44 . . . leading all the way, the red devils paced by a 29 point effort by gary johnson, trounced brookings 68-38 . . . myrtle point clinched the league championship and a berth in the state tourney as they out-shot and outrebounded a cold coquille squad for a 55-42 victory . . . gary johnson's 29 points were insufficient as the suffered a 66-48 defeat . . . coquille, making up 9 points in the last minute, fell just short as they went down to the 2nd defeat of a disastrous road trip to the tall gulls of seaside . . . the devils were again the victim of hot shooting, this time at the hands of the reedsport braves 69-44 . . . a-1 north bend outshot, outrebounded, and outclassed the smaller devils 59-38 . . . coquille bounced back into the win column with a 49-32 conquest of the newport cubs . . . north bend once again triumphed over the red devils as they won easily . . . gary johnson’s 27 points and don purvis' stellar board work paced the devils to a 69-59 victory over siuslaw . . . again siuslaw was the victim of a potent red devil attack, losing 63-36 . . . coquille ran up a 20-6 first quarter lead and easily defeated eagle point 69-36 . . . the red devils upset reedsport 50-36 as johnson's 27 points paced the spirited devils . . . purvis hooks against the tigers . . . 62 johnson is tied up by gold
